The NFL Draft is finally upon us, the most anticipated event of the offseason. What makes it so much fun is that no one knows what to expect. Rumors are swirling about what each team may do, but no one knows for sure. The only guarantee thus far is that the Las Vegas Raiders will pick Fernando Mendoza first overall.
But when the second quarterback will be selected has become a hot topic of conversation. Most people expect Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson to be the one, and he could go as early as late in round one. However, Simpson is a tough prospect to evaluate, and Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner just exposed a red flag, which may dent Simpson’s draft stock.
Ty Simpson’s Physical Concerns
Simpson has strong tape, and on the field, looks like he can be a solid NFL quarterback. However, being able to hold up in the NFL is a lot different than college. According to NFL on ESPN, Warner said, “I’ve talked to a lot of people that said, when they’re up close to him, his physical stature worries them.”
Warner continued, “There are some guys that can be smaller from a height standpoint, but they have some thickness to them… but Simpson is very slight from a physical standpoint, and so that’s a concern with a lot of people.”
In a draft like this that lacks top-flight quarterbacks, QB-needy teams will look for ways to push players up the board. Simpson looks like one who will benefit from that, as his name is being linked to the Arizona Cardinals, potentially at the back end of the first round. The Cardinals select 34th overall in the second round and could make a small move up to get Simpson at the end of the first and secure that fifth-year option on his rookie contract.
Cardinals’ QB Needs
There may not be a team that needs a quarterback more in this draft than the Cardinals. After releasing Kyler Murray this offseason, they do not have any real options at quarterback for the 2026 season or beyond. Simpson may take some time to develop, but he has traits that could make him a quality NFL starter.
Arizona is the heavy favorite to select Simpson, and the furthest he falls is likely the aforementioned pick 34. The first round of the draft is one of the most exciting moments of the year. Enjoy the chaos, and it will be interesting to see where Simpson is selected.
