Myles Garrett is building a resume that puts him among the NFL’s greatest defenders. However, as excellent as he has been on the football field, his speeding violations are a cause for concern.
While these incidents are minor legal infractions for him, one of Garrett’s former coaches showed concern for his avoidable mishaps.
Former Browns Coach Gregg Williams Addresses Myles Garrett’s Speeding Issues
Gregg Williams, the Cleveland Browns’ interim head coach in 2018 after Hue Jackson’s firing, commented on Garrett’s ninth speeding ticket since 2017.
Speaking with “Cleveland 92.3 The Fan radio” hosts Anthony Lima and Ken Carman, Williams said, “Sometimes you’ve got to check your ego at the door every single second of every day, and you gotta make sure this is not only for your safety but for everybody else’s safety out there, too.”
According to court records, Myles Garrett received a citation for clocking in at 94 miles per hour in a 70-mph zone on the Northeast Ohio interstate in February. Meanwhile, a related article by the Browns Plain Dealer’s Zach Mentz revealed that Garrett was driving at more than 100 mph when the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office pulled him over.
Instead, the officer cited him for speeding in his green 2024 Porsche at 94 mph to avoid a mandatory court appearance on March 10. He also paid $157.50 in speeding citation fees, loose change compared to the millions of dollars he earned throughout his career.
Williams hopes that his words will mean something to Garrett because they’ve been together in the Browns for two seasons. Before Williams took over for Jackson, he was the Browns’ defensive coordinator.
He helped the former Texas A&M standout become one of the NFL’s most disruptive defensive forces. Under Williams, Garrett went from 7 sacks in his rookie season to 13.5 and a Second-Team All-Pro selection in his second year.
Last season, Myles Garrett won his second Defensive Player of the Year award by establishing a single-season record of 23 sacks. Football-wise, it’s a favorable trade-off for the four-year, $160 million contract extension the Browns gave him during the 2025 offseason.
Last August, Garrett received a speeding ticket for going 100 mph in a 60-mph zone on I-71 in Springsville, Ohio. Three years before, he received another citation for failing to control his vehicle. Garrett was driving at 65 mph on a 45 mph road when his car crashed and flipped over.
While no other vehicles were involved in the accident, the seven-time Pro Bowler sustained shoulder and biceps injuries. His female passenger also incurred some injuries. It did not affect his on-field performance at all because he finished the 2022 season with 16 sacks.
In addition to his Pro Bowl selections, Garrett is a five-time First-Team All-Pro member. His six consecutive seasons with at least 12 sacks are also an NFL record.
