Bo Melton joined the Green Bay Packers late in the 2022 season to play receiver. He hasn’t been overly productive in his 25 career games with the team, but the Packers are trying him at cornerback during mandatory minicamp after Jaire Alexander’s recent release.
Melton recently spoke to the media about this opportunity. Does he see himself as the next Travis Hunter?

Bo Melton Working Both Ways for Packers, Won’t Compare Himself to Travis Hunter
Melton was a seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and spent most of his rookie season on the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad. The Packers signed him to their active roster in late December 2022, and Melton has been with Green Bay ever since.
He spent most of 2023 on the Packers’ practice squad but appeared in seven games that season, including the playoffs. Melton was on the active roster for each game in 2024, primarily playing special teams. In his 25 games with Green Bay, Melton has totaled 27 receptions, 351 yards, and two touchdowns.
After Alexander’s sloppy release, the Packers needed help at cornerback this offseason, so Melton began working on both sides of the ball during minicamp.
ESPN’s Rob Demovsky detailed Melton’s attempt at playing both ways. Melton talked to the media and opened up about how head coach Matt LaFleur suggested he play cornerback when he joined the team in 2022.
Melton said, “He [LaFleur] was like, ‘You ever play cornerback? That’s when it first got in my mind. And then after that I forgot, and now it came back. And everybody was hinting at it.”
“When you’re out there playing special teams and on punt you’re on the corner side and you’re out there doing crazy stuff, strapping people, they like, ‘Yeah, you could play some DB.’ So the situation we’re in now, it was like, ‘Let’s see if he can really do it.’ I don’t care, let’s do it.”

Melton stopped short of comparing himself to Hunter, saying, “Travis is a different athlete, as everybody knows. He’s a Heisman Trophy winner, won a lot of awards. I’m not going to compare myself to somebody that’s done that. But what I will say is I like to run for days.”
Melton has shown that he’s tough enough to play defense, and that could be his best chance to make the team after the Packers drafted two receivers and signed Mecole Hardman.
It’s a long shot that Melton turns this short stint at cornerback into a long-term opportunity. With the NFL’s summer break coming up, Green Bay will have a chance to bring another defensive back with full-time training. However, it’s impressive that Melton is taking advantage of his opportunity.
