Ex-Eagles WR Golden Tate III Breaks Silence on the Feud Between Carson Wentz and Nick Foles in Philadelphia

Many speculated that Carson Wentz and Nick Foles did not see eye-to-eye after the Eagles' Super Bowl, and now Golden Tate III has spoken up.

Golden Tate III hasn’t logged a statistic in the NFL in half a decade, and with his career in the league behind him, the former wide receiver has plenty to be proud of. In his time, he earned one Pro Bowl nod and helped the Seattle Seahawks win Super Bowl 48.

He also saw the Philadelphia Eagles first-handly deal with the struggle of the post-Super Bowl hangover in his lone season. One element of the fallout was an apparent rift between Nick Foles and Wentz, and Tate shared the story.

Golden Tate III Comments on Carson Wentz-Nick Foles Relationship

Speaking on a June 6 edition of “Bussin’ with the Boys,” the former Eagles wide receiver gave new details about the 2018 Eagles, and it was not the best look. For starters, the two main quarterbacks didn’t get along.

“Foles and Carson, they tolerated each other, but you could tell they were not best buds,” Tate said. He went on, explaining what he believed Wentz’s headspace to be in and detailing what he saw.

“Deep down, you’re thinking, ‘Is this the beginning of the end? How do they view me? Do they even think I was a huge part of the Super Bowl run, although I didn’t take us the whole way?’ After a bad game, [Wentz is] reading to see people absolutely s*** on him, and I would walk up in the bus, and I would just see him [sulking].”

Tate then turned his attention to Foles, whom he claimed to be much more engaged.

“And you had Foles, who was coming into the locker room, he spoke with everybody. I wouldn’t get a single pass the entire game, but in the fourth quarter, he’d make me think it was still coming. ‘Hey, Golden, stay ready. Stay ready. I’m coming to you.’ I was part of Carson’s clique, but it felt like with Carson, he had his four to five, six guys [on] offense [and] defense that he liked and he hung with, and that was all that mattered.”

Of course, nearly a decade later, both players are far from the center of the spotlight. Wentz’s career appears to be hanging on by a thread despite spending time with Andy Reid and Sean McVay in recent years. Foles is now retired. However, Wentz hasn’t thrown in the towel just yet.

Wentz Continues To Chase Redemption, Where He Could Try Next

With Aaron Rodgers joining the Pittsburgh Steelers, Wentz’s options were dealt a huge blow, but it isn’t over yet for the quarterback. At this point, his best option might be to wait for an unplanned vacancy with a team. However, if he wants to get on a roster sooner rather than later, he can try a few places.

The Chicago Bears are all aboard the Caleb Williams Express, but their backup situation could use another veteran to compete for the right to mentor Williams.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have an offense that runs itself at this point, and if there was ever a chance for a Wentz redemption arc, it might be there. The Buccaneers finished third in PFSN’s Offense+ metrics, giving the quarterback plenty of reason for hope. They will first need to wait for a potential opportunity for months or years after getting on the roster due to Baker Mayfield.

Additionally, the New Orleans Saints’ new quarterback plan could make sense. The team is potentially on shaky footing after Derek Carr’s surprise retirement. Of course, this could also be the end of the road for Wentz if he can’t find more work.
