The New York Giants signed Jameis Winston in free agency. It was an intriguing move that seemed to prime the franchise to select a quarterback early in the 2025 NFL Draft. However, this may not be the case after their latest move involving Russell Wilson.
New York Giants Land Russell Wilson on 1-Year Deal
The Giants are signing Wilson to a one-year contract, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal is worth up to $21 million and includes $10.5 million in guaranteed money. Wilson had discussions with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cleveland Browns before making this decision, according to Schefter.

Wilson spent the 2024 season with the Steelers. Before that, he spent two seasons with the Denver Broncos following a trade from the Seattle Seahawks. Wilson is a former Super Bowl champion, winning in 2013 with the Seahawks.
How Does Wilson Fit in With Giants?
Wilson signing with New York is certainly interesting. He joins the team as their projected starting quarterback. PFSN ranked the former Super Bowl champion as the 71st best free agent available before free agency began.
“At one point, Wilson was the dual-threat standard, but as he has aged and the game has evolved, that’s simply no longer the case. His yards per pass attempt when outside of the pocket has dipped in three consecutive seasons, and in his age-36 season, any sort of rebound should be viewed as a major surprise, not a realistic expectation,” said PFSN’s Stats and Insights team of the veteran signal-caller.

Wilson played 11 games with the Steelers in 2024. He threw for a little more than 2,400 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions. The veteran quarterback helped Pittsburgh make the playoffs. However, they lost to the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the postseason.
The Giants finished with a disappointing record in 2024. New York hoped to make a run at the playoffs this past season. However, they stumbled to a 3-14 finish. As a result, they will pick third overall in the current 2025 NFL Draft order.
As things stand, Wilson is set to be the starting quarterback for the Giants. He will be backed up by Winston, who is very capable in that role. What may complicate matters is the third overall pick. New York could still select its quarterback of the future; if they do, the depth chart may be uprooted before the season begins in September.
The Giants now have two quarterbacks who could start games. They could help them on the field now and help them mentor a quarterback long-term. Whatever happens, the Giants are certainly a team to watch as the offseason continues to roll along.
