Giants Predicted To Pass on Shedeur Sanders, Trade No. 3 Overall Pick in Bold Draft-Day Move

The New York Giants have navigated a rather puzzling offseason. Initially, it seemed almost certain they would target a quarterback with the third overall pick, with Shedeur Sanders often mentioned as the likely choice.

However, the acquisitions of both Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson have made that scenario less definitive. For now, the Giants possess some flexibility and could opt to select the best available player when their turn arrives. One analyst, though, believes they will still address the quarterback position, just not with the third pick.

New York Giants Trade Down to Add Quarterback?

Last year, Daniel Jones was the primary quarterback in New York. But after his mid-season release, the Giants lacked a true signal-caller. Now, they have both Wilson and Winston on their roster.

However, neither is viewed as a long-term foundational quarterback for the team. Consequently, the possibility remains that they will add a third quarterback via the 2025 NFL Draft. The most obvious candidate in that scenario would be Shedeur Sanders.

But, Kyle Soppe of PFSN suggests that a better strategy for the Giants would be to find a trade partner for the third overall pick and acquire a young quarterback later in the draft.

“In this scenario, New York would be looking for a creative team with holes to fill. Abdul Carter is going to be appealing to many teams, and the Giants would likely have their pick of packages should they make No. 3 available.” However, that scenario could also work, potentially even more effectively, with Travis Hunter instead of Carter.

“Their number of options increases if they can identify teams interested in Hunter’s unique skill set. The Seattle Seahawks have openings on both sides of the ball and we know that Sean Payton hasn’t been afraid to think outside of the box — something he could opt to do with Colorado’s dual-threat weapon.”

Of course, Soppe acknowledges that this scenario is not the most probable. However, he argues that it would provide the Giants with the most flexibility and a potential solution for both their short-term and long-term quarterback needs.

The latest mock draft from PFSN’s Jacob Infante, however, presents a slightly different approach than Soppe’s idea. Instead of trading away their third overall pick, Infante envisions New York keeping the selection and using it on Travis Hunter.

For their quarterback of the future, Infante has the Giants trading up to the 27th overall pick from the Baltimore Ravens, exchanging their 34th and 99th overall picks. Pairing this quarterback with Malik Nabers and the hypothetical addition of Hunter would provide them with long-term stability on the offensive side of the ball.

And, even in the short term, the combination of Hunter and Nabers with the veteran quarterback duo already in place would be enough to elevate an offense that ranked second-to-last on PFSN’s Offense+ metric last season.
