Shedeur Sanders has been one of the most talked about players in the 2025 NFL Draft class. Most of the buzz revolves around discussions about his attitude and physical traits, along with questions about whether coaches would be able to handle the attention someone like Sanders would bring to the team.
One team that’s been talked about being cool on him, and possibly going so far as to trade out of the third overall spot, is the New York Giants. However, there’s one point of view that hasn’t gotten much attention: their current quarterback situation and how it relates to head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen’s position within the building.

Head Coach Brian Daboll and General Manager Joe Schoen Are on the Hot Seat
Daboll and Schoen are staring down the barrel of a make-or-break year in New York, so hitching their wagons to a rookie quarterback would be a bold move. For those reasons, FS1’s Craig Carton believes the Giants will ride with one of their veteran options.
“He’s not gonna be the New York Giants quarterback,” Carton said on Breakfast Ball on FS1. “The reason the Giants brought in both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston is because their coach and their GM are basically on a prove-it year.”

Carton continued: “And they are not going to put their jobs on the line for a rookie quarterback who does have question marks about his ability to play at the NFL level. They’re gonna go one of two guys who, while not great recently, are competent enough to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.”
The Giants gambled on former first-round pick Daniel Jones. After signing a four-year $160 million deal before the 2024 season, Jones found himself benched after Week 11 which left Daboll in desperate need of stability at the game’s most important position.
After finishing last year at 3-14, Daboll and Schoen need to right the ship, so they brought in two veteran quarterbacks to do it. The 36-year-old Wilson brings a Super Bowl pedigree even though he faded down the stretch for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season.
Winston, 31, is a fun, gun-slinging type who put up almost as many interceptions (12) as he did touchdowns (13) in 2024 for the Cleveland Browns after Deshaun Watson went down for the season.
PFSN’s David Bearman has the Giants taking Colorado Buffaloes two-way superstar Travis Hunter in his latest mock draft. If this prediction holds, the Giants could roll the dice on quarterbacks like Ohio State’s Will Howard or Louisville’s Tyler Shough in later rounds.
That sort of thinking could net them a developmental player who can learn from veterans. Regardless, the Giants have to know deep down that their current quarterback situation is not viable for the long haul.
