Reports linking the New York Giants to a trade pursuit of Trent McDuffie began circulating after the Kansas City Chiefs dealt the star cornerback to the Los Angeles Rams. However, a longtime NFL reporter says the rumors are not accurate.
Insiders Set Record Straight on Giants’ Role in Trent McDuffie Trade Rumors
According to NFL insider Gary Myers, the Giants were never involved in discussions to acquire McDuffie. Myers wrote on X that he spoke with a trusted source who confirmed the Giants never contacted the Chiefs about the All-Pro defensive back.
“Setting the record straight: Just heard from a trusted source that Giants were never in the Trent McDuffie trade market. They never spoke to the Chiefs about him,” Myers wrote. Myers added that the rumor may have originated with the Chiefs during the negotiations.
“The story came out of KC, so perhaps Chiefs were trying to create leverage with Rams by claiming others interested. Besides, draft capital price was way too high. Rams of McVay/Snead have history of trading #1 picks.”
Myers’ clarification suggests the narrative linking the Giants to the trade talks likely developed during the negotiation process rather than reflecting a genuine interest on the Giants’ part.
The trade ultimately sent McDuffie to Los Angeles in exchange for a significant haul of draft capital. The Chiefs received the No. 29 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft along with fifth- and sixth-round selections and a 2027 third-round pick.
The deal signals different priorities for each franchise heading into the upcoming season. The Chiefs moved a cornerstone defensive player but dramatically increased their draft resources.
The Chiefs now hold nine total selections in the upcoming draft, including two first-round picks, giving general manager Brett Veach substantial flexibility as he reshapes the roster around quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
McDuffie, who turns 26 later this year, is entering the final season of his rookie contract and is expected to command a massive extension. Rather than commit major cap space to the cornerback position, the Chiefs opted to collect draft assets and reload with younger, cheaper talent. Los Angeles, meanwhile, paid a premium to secure a true shutdown cornerback.
The Rams have long been willing to sacrifice draft capital to add established veterans, particularly under head coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead. With quarterback Matthew Stafford nearing the end of his career, the franchise appears intent on maximizing its current championship window.
McDuffie immediately fills a major need in the Rams’ secondary. Despite speculation after the trade, Myers’ report clarifies that the Giants were never part of the process. The Giants is now continuing its offseason planning under new head coach John Harbaugh, without involvement in the blockbuster McDuffie deal.
