The New York Giants could be heading into the 2026 NFL Draft with at least one clear priority — fixing the backbone of their defense. After an inconsistent season in the secondary, the need for a versatile, high-IQ defensive back has become increasingly evident.
With a top-five pick at their disposal, the Giants are in a prime position to land a blue-chip prospect. One name that continues to surface in draft discussions is Ohio State safety Caleb Downs.
Giants Predicted to Target Caleb Downs as Instant-Impact Defensive Starter
During a recent episode of PFSN’s “Football Debate Club,” hosted by Cam Mellor alongside PFSN’s NFL draft analysts Jacob Infante and Ian Cummings, the focus turned to potential first-round fits for teams picking early. When discussing the Giants, Cummings highlighted concerns about the current secondary setup while pointing toward a solution.
“I look at the back end of their defense, they’ve got Jevon Holland, but Tyler Nubin has not really worked out for them,” said Cummings. “I think you need a dynamic glue guy in that secondary, and Caleb Downs is that type of player. Dillon Thieneman is another one that I would consider, but to me, Caleb Downs is a guy who makes an instant impact.”
Expanding on that point, Cummings emphasized Downs’ positional flexibility and how it aligns with modern defensive demands.
“We know how much John Harbaugh likes to invest in the secondary, and when you have a guy like Caleb Downs who can play in the slot as a big nickel potentially, he can play split-field single high as a rover in the box. There’s no end to his versatility. And I think the Giants defense will heavily benefit from that,” Cummings added.
Despite not always producing eye-popping stats, Downs’ film tells a far more compelling story. According to PFSN’s scouting report, his on-field impact goes well beyond raw numbers.
“Downs’ raw production underwhelms in comparison to his prestige, but don’t let that fool you: On film, he’s one of the best safety prospects in recent memory, and is a blue-chip player in the 2026 NFL Draft class.”
The report further highlights his instincts and physicality: “He’s an expert at running alleys, scraping through contact, and securing solo tackles, and his instant reaction-to-stimulus ensures he’s always responsive on plays. And while his raw production in coverage makes him easy to overlook in space, his coverage game is just as exhilarating.”

Downs’ football intelligence and leadership traits have also drawn praise, with many viewing him as a coach’s ideal player — someone capable of organizing a defense from day one.
On PFSN’s Consensus Big Board, Downs holds an elite 93.39 grade, ranking No. 2 overall in the class and projecting firmly as a first-round selection. His standing near the top of the board underscores both his floor and long-term upside as a foundational defensive piece.
According to the PFSN CFB Safety Impact Metrics, Downs posted an 83.5 score with a B grade, ranking 63rd for the season and 141st overall historically. While those numbers may not fully capture his influence, they reflect a steady and reliable presence in the secondary.
If the Giants do invest in Downs with a top-five pick, they wouldn’t just be adding talent — they’d be acquiring a defensive centerpiece. His versatility could unlock multiple schemes and stabilize a unit that has lacked consistency.
