After hiring John Harbaugh in the offseason, the New York Giants have some work to do around the roster to get back to winning ways in 2026. Some areas around the roster are obvious places where upgrades need to be found, but running back is not one of them. Last season, when healthy, Cam Skattebo was excellent and was a perfect partner with QB Jaxson Dart, but that injury knocked Skattebo out for a while.
Now, with free agency and the draft nearing close, the Giants are rumored to be interested in the high-end RB market. Could the Giants’ interest in another starting RB hint towards Skattebo’s injury being much worse than previously believed?
With the Giants Potentially Targeting RBs Concerns Grow Around Cam Skattebo’s Injury
One of the rumors that began to spread during NFL combine week was that the Giants were set to look at Kenneth Walker III in free agency and Jeremiyah Love in the draft. Previously, especially in the draft, RB was not one of the positions many believed the Giants would lead the charge on.
But if the rumors are true, then this is what the Giants will do this offseason, and the NFL world is now concerned over Skattebo’s injury, which he suffered last season.
NFL insider Matt Harmon explains what the Giants face in free agency this offseason:
So much smoke around the Giants wanting to add a back this offseason and way too many available names in free agency, before you even consider the draft, to think an addition isn’t coming. Maybe I’m wrong but it feels like it would be a surprise if Skattebo doesn’t at least face… https://t.co/qvmUI96XMb

Fantasy football insider Ian Hartitz joked about how the Giants could add every top RB, “So here for the Giants to sign Kenneth Walker, draft Jeremiyah Love, and then start Cam Skattebo Week 1”

“It makes sense tbh. Skattebo coming off an injury and isn’t as explosive as Walker/Love. Even if they don’t get those guys I think they’re gonna bring in some competition in that room,” says NFL insider JP Acosta.

Fantasy football account Start Sit ‘Em questioned the severity of Skattebo’s injury, “This and the Jeremiyah Love rumor? Are they expecting Skattebo to miss the beginning of the season?”

News account Commanders Crew spoke on his belief that Harbaugh needed a new RB. “I’ve said this from the beginning, Harbaugh has always had a dynamic 3-down RB and that will be a high priority for them. Skattebo is not a dynamic 3-down RB.”

Fantasy football insider Dan Fornek gave his opinion on Skattebo and his injuries, “Cam Skattebo is just Isiah Pacheco with draft capital and some meme clips. He already proved his rushing style may not hold up, and his ankle injury involved a dislocation, a bone break, and a ligament tear. He’s probably not going to be 100% in 2026.”

He then went on to say, “Defenses are trying to remove explosives in the pass game, which means you need to generate them with the run. Skattebo was RB32 in explosive run rate before getting hurt. It makes sense that the Giants are in on top-end RBs this offseason. Just let Skat be a battering ram.”

Time will tell what the Giants end up doing at the RB position, but it does seem that Skattebo’s spot at RB1 is up for grabs this offseason.
