George Pickens Coldly Bails On Sold-Out Youth Camp, But a Steelers Star Stepped Up In His Absence

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens bailed on a sold-out youth camp in Pittsburgh on short notice, but a former Steelers teammate has stepped up to save the day.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens has caused more controversy in the Pittsburgh area despite leaving the team in May. Pickens was scheduled to attend a recent sold-out youth football camp in Pittsburgh but changed his mind on short notice.

TruEdge Sports, the company that organized the event, has found a replacement for Pickens but pulled no punches in their assessment of the receiver’s actions.

George Pickens Turns His Back on Pittsburgh Families With Youth Camp U-Turn

TruEdge Sports announced their summer football camp schedule in early April, including youth camps with stars like Derwin James, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Maxx Crosby. Pickens was also on the list, scheduled to attend a camp in Pittsburgh on June 28.

Since then, though, the receiver has moved states. The company revealed that they had sought clarity from Pickens regarding his commitment to the date.

According to a message posted by the company, Pickens reiterated his desire to attend the camp before withdrawing his commitment with just a few days’ notice. The post, addressed to the families that had signed up for the event, labelled Pickens’ actions as “a disappointing lack of accountability.”

“Our team at TruEdge was fully prepared to host a camp this Saturday because we were led to believe George would follow through on his commitment,” according to TruEdge’s  statement. “His sudden decision to back out not only reflects a disappointing lack of accountability, but also shows a disregard for the families and children who were excited to meet him.”

Pickens’ Former Teammate Steps Up to Save the Camp

Pickens‘ late decision to cancel his appearance threatened to derail the camp, which would have undoubtedly devastated those children set to attend. Thankfully, Pickens’ former Steelers teammate, Pat Freiermuth, has stepped in to save the day.

The tight end may even be joined by some more Steelers stars, with the post suggesting that the company was speaking to “multiple” other players on the team. Pickens is one of the most exciting players in the NFL from a pure talent standpoint, but his attitude and lack of consistency have been frustrating early in his career.

The wide receiver is known for making some controversial moments on the field, but his latest decision will be viewed horribly in Pittsburgh. After three years in the NFL, Pickens will need to grow up fast in Dallas if he is to make the most of his first NFL contract year with the Cowboys.
