George Kittle Injury Report: 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan Provides Concerning Update on Star TE

The 49ers suffered a major blow as George Kittle suffered a hamstring injury in Week 1 vs. Seattle. Here's the latest update on the star tight end.

The San Francisco 49ers overhauled much of their roster this offseason, aiming to bounce back after a steep decline last year. But with a thin wide receiver group, the team is leaning on Christian McCaffrey, Brock Purdy, and George Kittle more than ever.

Unfortunately, their season didn’t start smoothly, as McCaffrey entered Week 1 nursing a calf injury, while Purdy and Kittle both picked up injuries in the loss to the Seattle Seahawks. So, what’s the latest on Kittle’s condition?

What Happened to George Kittle?

Kittle remains one of the top tight ends in the NFL, with his greatest strength for the 49ers being his consistent ability to deliver big numbers. However, during Week 1 against the Seahawks, he was forced out of the game midway through the second quarter.

After already recording a touchdown in the first quarter, it was a brutal blow to an already depleted San Francisco roster. He was immediately taken into the blue tent. To make matters worse, he was accompanied into the tent by Trent Williams.

Even though he came out of the tent in time for the Niners to take the ball on offense, the picture was bleak for fans in the Bay Area. As Matt Lively reported on X, “George Kittle is out of the tent, but as the offense takes the field, he is wearing a baseball cap.”

That possibility might quickly become a reality for the 49ers. Soon after reports emerged about him standing on the sidelines with a baseball cap on, Lively confirmed in another report, “George Kittle is OUT with a hamstring injury.”

His night ended with just four receptions for 25 yards and a touchdown.

How Long Will Kittle Be Out?

On Monday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Kittle will miss “a few weeks” due to the injury.

This aligns with what ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported earlier that day — that Kittle would miss multiple weeks. However, the Niners aren’t panicking because of their depth behind Kittle.

“First of all, the tight end that replaced him, Jake Tongs, made an unbelievable catch to help him in that game,” Schefter said. “So, I think that they feel pretty good about their tight ends right now.

“They have tight ends. They’ll make do without Kittle. And I would imagine with the hamstring injury, he’ll miss some time.”

On Tuesday, September 9, the 49ers decided to place Kittle on the injured reserve. He will miss at least the next four games for the NFC West franchise.

Even if the 49ers are confident in their backups, replacing the NFL’s top tight end for multiple weeks will be a challenge, especially with Purdy (toe) and receiver Jauan Jennings (shoulder) also dealing with injuries.
