Gennings Dunker’s NFL Draft Potential
Gennings Dunker has been the Iowa Hawkeyes’ full-time starter at right tackle for three years running. Being a storied Iowa offensive lineman is enough to earn a measured amount of NFL Draft buzz, but Dunker passes the rest of the vibe check, too. He’s a barrel-chested brute with a mullet and a mean streak, and the tape is impressively consistent beyond the surface-level attributes.
At around 6’4″, 315 pounds, with over 33″ arms, Dunker has good size, and is a top-heavy blocker whose upper-body strength and power shows in both phases. In the run game, he’s a pure finisher who can punch, latch, and drive defenders out of plays, and in the passing game, he has the pass set and balance to match rushers while keeping synergy. His stunt vision and angle IQ are both strong points, and when he has defenders in his wheelhouse, Dunker doesn’t hold back from delivering all of his aggression in a single strike, levying brutal jabs and snatches.
Dunker is well-leveraged, well-versed with his hands and feet, intelligent, and ultra-physical to close out reps. The questions stem from which position he’ll play in the NFL. His proportional length isn’t quite elite, his lower body is a bit leaner and not as strong when anchoring, and he also lacks the high-end hip flexibility to make tight transitions and recover ground when he needs to. For that reason, I project Dunker inside as a guard in the NFL, but he can be an impact starter at that spot.
CFB Week 9 Update
Iowa unexpectedly throttled Minnesota 41-3, and a lot of the work was done up front on offense. Gennings Dunker’s combination of explosiveness, lower-body driving power, torque, and finishing ability can be overwhelming for edge defenders, and he also has the necessary power component to cave in interior blockers on down blocks. Dunker’s film is a reminder that trench play is just as much mental as it is physical, and when you relish contact and the chance to bury opponents like Dunker does, it can set the tone for an entire unit.
CFB Week 10 Update
Iowa was on a bye in Week 10, but the Hawkeyes will return to action in Week 11 against the top-ranked Oregon Ducks. Oregon is especially strong in the trenches, but Iowa can match them there. Dunker himself will be tasked with defending against Matayo Uiagalelei and Teitum Tuioti in the passing game, as well as driving them off the ball in the ground game. This could be a statement game for Dunker if he proves effective in helping the Hawkeyes stay in it.
CFB Week 11 Update
Dunker is a bit low-cut with a heavy upper body, and that build got in his way a couple times in Week 11. In the run game, opposing initial power eroded Dunker’s anchor strength and center of gravity more than once, and there were times where he struggled to sustain his own power exertions with leg drive. Dunker improved down the stretch, and on one occasion, he moved Matayo Uiagalelei almost ten yards with his power drive. But Dunker will have to be more consistent with his pad level, base load, and leverage maintenance moving forward.
Where Is Dunker Being Selected Most Often in the PFSN Mock Draft Simulator?
Dunker currently holds the No. 71 overall rank among prospects, reflecting his standing among mid-round prospects. His most recent Average Draft Position (ADP) of 61.8 as of November 11 reflects that he is typically being selected in the second or third round.
Interestingly, his ADP is higher than his rank, suggesting that users are targeting him more aggressively than his positional ranking might indicate.
Users controlling the Indianapolis Colts have been the team that selected Dunker the most frequently over the past week, accounting for 2.8% of their picks across all seven rounds.
