As the Pittsburgh Steelers’ front office and the black and gold faithful wait with bated breath for Aaron Rodgers to decide if he is going to be their QB1. Business, as usual, must go on. The most recent move inside the Steelers’ front office was to meet with this free agent, as general manager Omar Khan hopes to add depth to the wide receiver room.
Gabe Davis Meets With the Steelers
According to Steelers correspondent Mark Kaboly, free agent wide receiver Gabe Davis is meeting with the Steelers on Thursday, June 5.

Omar Khan, the Steelers’ general manager, is hopeful that Davis, who has 29 total touchdowns through his five-year career with the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars, could be adding to his touchdown tally in 2025 from passes from Rodgers in black and gold.
Davis is coming off an injury-plagued 2024 season that saw his production fall to a career low. Now 26 years old, Davis remains optimistic that he has plenty left in the tank as he looks for a fresh start.
If Rodgers, a four-time MVP and Super Bowl champion, does end up under center for the Steelers in 2025, he could be precisely the spark Davis needs to rediscover the effective production he once showcased in Buffalo.
Even though injuries derailed his 2024 season, Davis struggled to make an impact on the field with the Jaguars. Davis made 20 receptions for 239 yards and two touchdowns in 2024. However, just one year prior, Davis caught seven touchdown passes with the Bills in an overall solid season as one of Josh Allen’s primary targets.
If Davis does recover and bounces back from the injuries that took him off the field in 2024, he could be a valuable pickup for any team in search of wide receiver depth, especially given that his asking price certainly won’t be too high.
This could be Davis’ ultimate prove-your-worth season. If he can recover to full strength while catching passes from Rodgers, an all-time great, things are looking up for both Davis and the Steelers.
Pittsburgh Not Done Yet: WR Depth Still a Priority for Omar Khan
The Steelers have been keeping busy in the wide receiver department this offseason, and after their tête-à-tête with Davis, they might not be done just yet. Earlier in the offseason, Khan elected to bring in two-time Pro Bowl receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks to become the team’s WR1.
The addition of Metcalf promptly engulfed rumors of former second-round pick George Pickens’ future with the team. About two months later, the rumors were confirmed when Khan traded Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys.
The stats say Metcalf as the primary option is an upgrade, but the issue is that following him, the Steelers are thin at the position. Calvin Austin III is entering his third year in the NFL after a strong sophomore season in which he caught 36 passes for 548 yards and four touchdowns, all of which were improvements from his rookie season.
The Steelers also brought in veteran Robert Woods this offseason for some added depth. Will Austin and Woods be enough to effectively support their QB when Metcalf is covered? Khan, seemingly, thinks not, given his reported targeting of Davis.
As Khan meets with Davis in search of depth at the wide receiver position, another free agent receiver could soon be off the board. The real question is whether Davis can return to form and become a reliable target for the Steelers’ next quarterback, who Khan hopes will be Rodgers.
