What to Watch For at the 2026 World Cup

The group stage is loaded. Group I is the group of death, pairing world No. 1 France with Senegal, Erling Haaland’s Norway, and an Iraq side back at the World Cup for the first time in 40 years. France meets Senegal on June 16 in a rematch of the 2002 shocker that bounced the defending champions in the group stage.

The marquee early fixtures stack up fast. Brazil faces Morocco at New York New Jersey Stadium on June 13, a meeting with real edge after Morocco’s semifinal run in Qatar. England and Croatia renew eight years of history from the 2018 semifinal on June 17 in Arlington, Texas. And Tunisia against Japan in Monterrey on June 20 will be the 1,000th match in World Cup history.

The home crowds get the spotlight, too. All three host nations open at home, with the United States drawing the toughest of the host groups in Group D alongside Paraguay, Australia, and Türkiye, opening against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium on June 12. Canada begins in Toronto, and Mexico landed the friendliest draw of any host.

A couple of storylines to file away: Italy missed a third straight World Cup after losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties, and Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan all make their debuts, with Curaçao the smallest nation by population ever to qualify.

How the World Cup Knockout Bracket Falls

The format changes everything once group play ends. The top two from each group plus the eight best third-place teams advance, filling a 32-team Round of 32 that starts June 28, the first extra knockout round in tournament history.

From there, it tightens quickly. The Round of 16 runs July 4 through 7, the quarterfinals July 9 through 11, and the semifinals land July 14 in Arlington and July 15 in Atlanta. The third-place match is July 18 in Miami Gardens, and the final caps it all on July 19. Every match from the quarterfinals on will be played in the United States. There’s history riding on it, too: FIFA confirmed a record $871 million prize pool, with $50 million going to the winner, the largest payout ever at a single tournament.
