Bill Belichick’s high-profile move to college football was expected to transform North Carolina into an ACC contender. Instead, his first season in Chapel Hill turned into a nightmare as the Tar Heels stumbled to a disappointing 4-8 record.
Although the former New England Patriots coach has insisted Year 2 will look “night and day” compared to last season, one prominent college football insider believes the program remains far from turning the corner.
College Football Insider Questions North Carolina’s NFL-Caliber Talent Under Bill Belichick
College football insider Matt Zenitz raised serious concerns about North Carolina’s roster, pointing to the program’s complete absence from the most recent NFL Draft as evidence that the Tar Heels lack top-end talent.
According to Zenitz, his assessment isn’t based solely on last season’s record. Instead, it reflects conversations with several NFL executives and personnel evaluators, who believe North Carolina remains alarmingly thin in NFL-ready talent heading into the 2026 season, with little expected to change by the 2027 NFL Draft.
“Well, for me, I’m going to go back to the NFL part of it,” he told CBS Sports. “So this past draft, they didn’t have a single player drafted. And when talking to NFL people this summer, some of the different people around the NFL front office and personnel world, this is a team that is frankly depleted once again in terms of next-level talent and seems like they only have one player at this point that scouts are projecting right now to be a draftable guy, at least heading into the season, and that’s a later-round draft possibility.”

North Carolina failed to produce an NFL Draft pick for the first time since 2016, ending a streak of nine consecutive drafts with at least one selection. During that span, the Tar Heels produced multiple draft picks in seven draft classes, three first-round selections, and at least one player selected in the fifth round or earlier every year.
The Tar Heels are counting on several young players to take a step forward in 2026, but early projections identify wide receiver Jordan Shipp as the only player currently viewed as a potential NFL Draft selection after his breakout 2025 campaign.
Zenitz acknowledged that those projections could change over the course of the season. However, he explained that his preseason outlook is heavily influenced by the amount of NFL-caliber talent on a roster, and he believes North Carolina simply doesn’t have enough of it.

“So for me, and maybe this is a bad way of doing it, but for me heading into the year, a big part of projecting things is built around just the amount of next-level talent that teams have, and North Carolina does not have much of it heading into this season.”
Belichick’s future at North Carolina could ultimately depend on how quickly he can develop that talent. As the Tar Heels prepare for another ACC campaign, the legendary coach is still searching for impact players on both sides of the ball.
North Carolina did add several intriguing newcomers, including Lehigh transfer wide receiver Mason Humphrey, linebacker Peyton Seelmann, tight end Jaxxon Warren, safety Greg Smith, and several other additions.
However, Zenitz believes those moves have yet to significantly change how NFL evaluators view the roster.
Despite the optimism surrounding Belichick’s second season, he faces the difficult task of proving North Carolina’s roster is more talented than NFL scouts currently believe. A dramatic turnaround in 2026 may be the only way to quiet the growing doubts surrounding his tenure.
