Fox isn’t waiting until the offseason to make a major move to its NFL broadcast crew. The network found itself in a difficult position during Week 5, when analyst Mark Sanchez was involved in a strange incident in Indianapolis while preparing to work the Colts-Raiders game. The altercation led to him being stabbed and later charged with a felony.
Since the incident, Sanchez has not returned to work with Fox, and it appears the network has officially moved on. According to Andrew Marchand, Fox is bringing in 13-time Pro Bowl quarterback Drew Brees to serve as a game analyst. Brees is expected to make his Fox debut in two weeks.
Why Is Fox Bringing in Drew Brees Mid-Season?
According to Marchand’s report, the agreement between Brees and Fox will keep the former quarterback on as an analyst for the rest of the 2025 season. Additionally, Brees is expected to continue calling games through at least the 2026-27 season as well. While the exact terms of the deal are not public, it is reportedly a multi-year agreement.
With this move, Fox creates a formidable one-two-three punch for its NFL Sunday coverage, as Brees joins a roster that includes Tom Brady and Greg Olsen. Brees will be partnered with play-by-play announcer Adam Amin, who was formerly partnered with Sanchez.
This hiring signals the “likely end” for Sanchez at Fox. Sanchez pleaded not guilty to Level 5 felony battery charges in Marion County following the incident. The former quarterback had been with Fox since the summer of 2021.
For Brees, meanwhile, this opportunity represents a second chance in the broadcasting world. The legendary quarterback first tried his hand at broadcasting with NBC after retiring from the NFL in 2020. However, after Brees received mixed reviews, that partnership lasted only one season.
Brees has mostly stayed on the sidelines since then, but he has worked on studio shows for both Fox and ESPN. He also called the international feed for Netflix’s Christmas Day NFL game stream and was promoted to the domestic broadcast for the 2025 Christmas game.
If Brees is nearly as good an analyst as he was a quarterback, Fox is in great shape. In 287 career games, Brees threw for over 80,000 yards with 571 touchdowns while completing 67.7% of his passes. He earned 13 Pro Bowl selections, won a Super Bowl, and was named Super Bowl MVP.
Just last month, Brees was named as one of 52 players who advanced to the next round of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026 selection process. The final voting for the 2026 class will take place in January. Brees was already inducted into the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame in 2024.
