The Los Angeles Rams are not a team that’s afraid to make bold moves, and they may be on the verge of making another franchise-altering decision. Just three years after winning Super Bowl 56, the team is once again at a crossroads — this time with the face of the franchise.
Matthew Stafford has been the heartbeat of Sean McVay’s offense since arriving in 2021, leading the Rams to a Lombardi Trophy in his first season with the team. But now, at 37 years old and carrying a hefty $49.67 million cap hit for 2025, the whispers of Los Angeles moving on from its veteran quarterback are getting louder by the week. And if you ask former Super Bowl QB Chase Daniel, it might not be as crazy as it sounds.

Chase Daniel Thinks the Rams Might ‘Sell High’ on Matthew Stafford
Daniel, who spent over 13 seasons in the NFL as a reliable backup, recently shared his thoughts on the show “The Facility,” admitting that while the idea of trading Stafford initially seemed absurd it makes more sense the longer you think about it.
“When I heard this, I said, ‘You’re crazy.’ He took you to the playoffs the last few years, he brought you a Super Bowl,” Daniel said. “And then the more you think about it, the less crazy it gets for me. I could see the Rams trying to sell high. You have a declining asset eventually. He’s 37-38 with a very high value right now — that’s worth a lot.”

Stafford, to his credit, showed he still has plenty of gas left in the tank during the 2024 season, throwing for over 3,700 yards and 20 touchdowns while leading the Rams to a 10-7 record and a Wild Card berth for the second straight year.
However, concerns about his age remain, and with Los Angeles potentially eyeing a long-term transition at quarterback, it wouldn’t be shocking to see them explore the market. He had a grade of 71.9 (C-) in 2024, 22nd in the NFL according to PFSN’s QB+ metric.
The Rams Already Shocked the NFL Once This Offseason
If there’s one thing we know about the Rams, it’s that they don’t operate like a traditional franchise. Just weeks ago, they stunned everyone when Cooper Kupp revealed that the team was actively trying to trade him. The former Super Bowl MVP has been a cornerstone of the offense, but like Stafford, he’s getting older and carries a massive contract.

Moving both Stafford and Kupp would signal a dramatic shift in Los Angeles’ roster construction. Given Stafford’s experience, arm talent, and championship pedigree, plenty of contenders might line up to trade for him, even with his age and contract.
As the offseason unfolds, all eyes will be on Rams general manager Les Snead and head coach McVay to see if they truly pull the trigger on moving Stafford. If Daniel is right, it wouldn’t just be a shocking move, it could be the start of a brand new era in Los Angeles.
