The Dallas Cowboys are gearing up for a crucial offseason. Roster decisions are looming. Backfield depth is under the microscope. And one familiar name is suddenly back in the conversation.
As free agency approaches, a former Dallas running back has made it clear. A return to Texas is not off the table. And that statement alone could quietly shape the Cowboys’ offseason strategy.
Rico Dowdle’s Free Agency Comments Reignite Dallas Reunion Speculation
When asked about the chance of coming back to Dallas, Rico Dowdle didn’t hold back. “Oh yeah, for sure. I would never take an option off the table. I definitely would consider coming back to Dallas,” Dowdle said. “Truly thankful for them… they blessed me and gave me the opportunity, the starting point to be where I am today.”
Those words matter. Especially with Dallas facing key roster decisions heading into 2026.
At 27, Dowdle spent the first five years of his career with the Cowboys after joining the league as an undrafted free agent from South Carolina in 2020. His journey wasn’t without its bumps; a hip injury sidelined him for the entire 2021 season. But Dallas stood by him, re-signing him on one-year deals in both 2023 and 2024.

The hard work paid off in 2024 when Dowdle had a breakout season, racking up 1,079 rushing yards on 235 carries. He also caught 39 passes for 249 yards and three receiving touchdowns, solidifying his status as a legitimate NFL starter.
Dallas moved on in 2025. Dowdle signed a one-year, $2.75 million deal with Carolina, plus incentives. But instead of fading, he duplicated his production. He rushed 236 times for 1,076 yards (4.6 yards per carry) and six touchdowns. He also caught 39 passes for 297 yards and a receiving score.

One performance stood out. Against Dallas, Dowdle posted 239 total yards in a 30-27 Panthers win. Cowboys coaches, including Brian Schottenheimer, reportedly tracked that game closely.
The bigger picture now centers on the role. Dowdle previously said he wants a featured workload. That could complicate a Carolina return. Reports suggest his future there might be uncertain, especially after late-season usage dipped to just 15 touches across the final two games.
That reality could reopen the door in Dallas.
For the Cowboys, familiarity matters. Dowdle knows the system. He knows the building. And Dallas already knows he can produce behind their offensive structure.
Nothing is guaranteed. Free agency always shifts quickly. Teams will evaluate cap space, draft options, and internal development.
But Dowdle’s comments suggest something is being monitored. A reunion is not promised. It might not even be likely.
Still, it is clearly possible.
As Dallas gears up for another season with high playoff hopes, bringing back a reliable and driven runner could turn out to be one of the quieter but more significant storylines of the offseason to keep an eye on.
