This week presents some intriguing options that could provide significant value for your lineup. Smart fantasy football decisions aren’t always about the most prominent names, but rather about identifying favorable matchups and emerging opportunities.

Looking ahead to this week from last, the Lions wouldn’t have been a serious candidate. Circumstances have now changed.
Since head coach Dan Quinn felt it necessary to leave Jayden Daniels on the field in a game the Commanders trailed 38-7 midway through the fourth quarter, the talented sophomore QB is now lost for an extended period of time. That means the Lions get the pleasure of going up against Marcus Mariota.
While Mariota remains one of the better backups in the league, he’s not exactly instilling fear in opposing defenses. In four appearances, Mariota has thrown four total interceptions. He’s turned it over in all but one game in which he’s participated.
The Lions are coming off a bad home loss to the Vikings. Meanwhile, the Commanders are demoralized after losing their quarterback and already down their top receiver in Terry McLaurin. This has all the makings of a 45-7 demolition by Detroit.
Negative game script means opportunities for sacks and turnovers. Suddenly, the Lions are one of this week’s top options.
Houston Texans (vs. JAX)
The Jaguars being 5-3 is one of the biggest mirages this season. Trevor Lawrence has no business being an NFL starting quarterback, but continues to get away with it at the highest level.
Lawrence has turned the ball over at least once in five games this season. While he’s only taken 21 sacks, there have been two games in which he’s taken seven of them.
Against the Texans in Week 3, Lawrence managed 222 scoreless yards with an interception. Somehow, the Jaguars won the game.
This time around, the Jaguars are coming off a thrilling last-second victory over the Raiders in overtime. Meanwhile, the Texans dropped a heartbreaker to the Broncos. The stage is set for your classic double reverse narrative. The Jaguars are primed for a letdown, and the Texans are poised to bounce back.
Of course, if Davis Mills has to start this game, that’s not great news for the Texans’ offense. But it will likely mean they play conservatively and rely on their defense. This projects to be a low-scoring game, giving Houston a high floor. If they can get to Lawrence a couple of times and possibly force a turnover, a top-five finish is firmly in play.
Buffalo Bills DEF (at MIA)
The Buffalo Bills defense hasn’t produced much for fantasy this season, recording only two top-12 weeks on the year. However, since their Week 7 bye, Buffalo has amassed 10 sacks and four turnovers, and is the second-best defense in fantasy over those two weeks.
This Sunday, the Bills travel south for a divisional matchup with the hapless Miami Dolphins, who just committed three offensive turnovers in Week 9. Miami has become an incredibly predictable offense, and the Bills should be able to pressure Tua Tagovailoa throughout Sunday’s game.
The Dolphins lead the NFL in turnovers this season, with 15, and things likely won’t get much better against Buffalo this weekend.
Carolina Panthers DEF (vs. NOR)
The Carolina Panthers’ inclusion on this list might raise eyebrows, but the plucky NFC South outfit has performed well on the defensive side of the ball this year. Carolina has four turnovers and two top-six fantasy finishes over the last three weeks, despite being blown out by the Bills with Andy Dalton starting in Week 8.
Carolina just held the Green Bay Packers to 13 points on Sunday, and faces a far friendlier task this weekend. In Tyler Shough’s debut start at the weekend, the New Orleans Saints were in possession for a total of 16 minutes and seven seconds. That’s the 18th-lowest recorded time in possession in NFL history.
The Saints still managed to commit two turnovers in that game, a Shough interception and a fumble by Alvin Kamara. The Panthers won’t be many people’s first choice defense this week, but they are in a great spot.
