While most fantasy football managers have completely overlooked Dameon Pierce this season, the Houston Texans running back might be sitting on waiver wires as one of 2025’s most enormous sleeper opportunities.
With Joe Mixon sidelined for at least the first four weeks and Pierce going undrafted in nearly every league, smart managers could be looking at a potential league-winner hiding in plain sight.
Dameon Pierce’s Path Back to Relevance
The numbers tell a compelling story about Pierce’s untapped potential. During his rookie campaign 2022, Pierce averaged an impressive 84.9 scrimmage yards per game, showcasing the skill set that made him a fourth-round pick out of Florida. According to PFSN’s Fantasy Football Mock Draft Simulator, Pierce went undrafted as he’s available in 99.9% of PFSN user leagues. This reflects just how thoroughly the fantasy community has written him off. However, that dismissal might prove premature given Houston’s current backfield situation.

The Texans’ depth chart suddenly looks much more favorable for Pierce’s revival. With Mixon’s injury timeline extending through at least the season’s first month, Pierce finds himself as the primary option in an offense that showed significant improvement last season. The addition of quarterback C.J. Stroud and the continued development of the receiving corps should create more favorable game scripts for the running game.

The competition for touches appears manageable. Nick Chubb brings extensive NFL experience with 1,468 career touches, but his recent injury history raises durability concerns. Chubb has appeared in just 10 games over the past two seasons, making his reliability questionable for a team with playoff aspirations.
Pierce’s combination of proven college production, NFL experience, and suddenly available opportunity creates the perfect storm for a fantasy breakout. His complete absence from draft boards means managers can likely add him without significant investment, making the risk-reward ratio particularly attractive.
