Rico Dowdle’s Fantasy Outlook

Dowdle has been the better fantasy asset for most of the season. His back-to-back elite RB1 outings when Hubbard was sidelined with a calf injury ultimately earned him lead-back status. He dominated touches and snap share while establishing himself as one of fantasy’s most reliable options during that stretch.

After two games of the backs sharing work, head coach Dave Canales moved back to Dowdle as the clear RB1 with Hubbard operating as the backup. However, over the past couple of weeks, the Panthers have slowly shifted more toward a committee approach again. The workload distribution has become increasingly balanced rather than tilted heavily in Dowdle’s favor.

In Week 13 against the Rams, Dowdle saw 20 touches compared to Hubbard’s 19. However, Hubbard out-snapped him 38-27, signaling a significant shift in playing time allocation. Dowdle finished with 79 total yards on those 20 opportunities, converting them into solid if unspectacular production.

Dowdle is no longer the bellcow he was earlier in the season. He should now be viewed as the early-down and goal-line back rather than a three-down workhorse. His snap share dropped to 42.2% in Week 13 despite handling more total touches than his backfield partner. Since Week 9, Dowdle has commanded 68.8% of snaps and 50.9% of red-zone rushing attempts, maintaining his edge in critical situations.

Chuba Hubbard’s Fantasy Outlook

Hubbard has not been startable since sustaining the calf injury earlier this season. He came back too soon and his performance suffered dramatically, leading to him falling to clear backup status behind the surging Dowdle. The coaching staff showed little interest in expanding his role during those early weeks back.

As he got fully healthy, Hubbard started to earn more work in recent weeks. However, it wasn’t until Week 13 that he moved back into a prominent role. Hubbard had not exceeded seven opportunities since Week 8 before earning 19 of them against the Rams.

Hubbard had his best game of the season against his toughest opponent. He turned 17 carries into 83 yards while adding two receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown. The 124 total yards and score represented a massive bounce-back performance that likely earned him expanded playing time moving forward.

His 59.4% snap share in Week 13 represented a season high and dramatically exceeded Dowdle’s 42.2% mark. This snap distribution suggests the coaching staff has regained confidence in Hubbard’s ability to handle a featured role. Whether this represents the new norm or a one-week aberration remains to be seen.

Should You Start Dowdle or Hubbard This Week?

New Orleans presents a moderately difficult matchup for Carolina’s running backs. The Saints allow the 13th-fewest schedule-adjusted fantasy points per game to running backs at 19.5 points.

They are particularly good at defending pass-catching running backs. Just 11.9% of their total receiving yards allowed has gone to the position this season. Both Dowdle and Hubbard will need to generate production primarily through rushing rather than receiving work.

When these teams met in Week 10, the Saints dominated defensively in a 17-7 victory at Carolina. New Orleans shut down the Panthers’ rushing attack, derailing their game plan and forcing Bryce Young into uncomfortable passing situations. Carolina will need to establish the run more effectively in the rematch.

Fantasy managers should expect a relatively even touch distribution between the two backs. The good news is game script should not get away from the Panthers, who have been one of the most run-heavy teams in the league. That puts both backs in play as volume-based RB2s.

Dowdle maintains the advantage in goal-line situations, giving him slightly higher touchdown upside. Hubbard offers more explosive play potential based on his recent performance.
