Should You Start Los Angeles Chargers WRs Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, or Keenan Allen in Fantasy Football Week 17?

The Chargers passing game has been rough recently. Can fantasy managers trust Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, or Keenan Allen this week?

Los Angeles’ receiving corps heads into a critical Week 17 matchup with disappointing recent performances across the board. Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, and Keenan Allen all face questions about their fantasy viability. Which Chargers wide receiver, if any, deserves fantasy football consideration against Houston?

Ladd McConkey’s Fantasy Outlook

McConkey has been very disappointing this season despite maintaining his status as the clear WR1. He has posted under 45 receiving yards in five straight games, failing to establish the consistent production fantasy managers expected when they drafted him. The yardage drought represents a concerning trend for a player who entered the season with high expectations.

The only reason McConkey has any games with double-digit fantasy points over that span is because he scored in two of them. In his other three contests, he failed to exceed 4.3 points. His fantasy relevance depends entirely on finding the end zone, as the volume and efficiency metrics suggest he cannot be trusted for consistent yardage production.

McConkey remains the WR1 in name, but he has not been treated as such by the offensive game plan. His route participation and target share haven’t reflected true alpha receiver usage. The Chargers spread the ball around to multiple options, preventing McConkey from dominating targets the way top fantasy wideouts typically do.

Quentin Johnston’s Fantasy Outlook

Johnston has been the ultimate boom-or-bust play this season. He posted 20 points last week, his highest output since Week 5. The explosive performance showcased the ceiling that makes him tempting in fantasy lineups, but the inconsistency remains his defining characteristic.

Johnston has recorded just three other games in double digits since Week 5. The sporadic production makes him impossible to trust in crucial championship week matchups. Fantasy managers cannot predict when his weekly ceiling will materialize versus when he’ll disappear entirely from the game plan.

He benefited from facing a league-worst Cowboys pass defense last week. Dallas allows the most schedule-adjusted fantasy points to wide receivers, creating ideal conditions for Johnston’s big-play ability. Despite the favorable matchup, Johnston still saw just five targets, demonstrating that volume remains scarce even in optimal game environments.

Keenan Allen’s Fantasy Outlook

Allen has posted eight straight games with single-digit fantasy points. The veteran receiver is clearly a shell of his former self, no longer commanding the consistent target share that defined his prime years. Age and injuries have eroded the skill set that once made him one of the league’s most reliable fantasy options.

Allen can still catch the ball when targeted, but he’s not a featured part of the offense anymore. His role has diminished to that of a complementary piece rather than a primary receiving threat. The Chargers prioritize younger options in the passing game, relegating Allen to spot duty on shorter routes.

That situation is not about to change this week. Allen’s reduced role reflects a permanent shift in offensive philosophy rather than temporary circumstances. Fantasy managers should not expect a resurgence from a player whose production has steadily declined throughout the season.

Should You Start McConkey, Johnston, or Allen This Week?

Houston presents a brutal defensive matchup for Los Angeles’ receivers. The Texans allow the third-fewest schedule-adjusted fantasy points per game to wide receivers. They rank particularly stingy against outside receivers, allowing just 14.9 fantasy points per game to wideouts aligned wide.

The Texans have the best pass rush in the league, creating constant pressure that disrupts timing routes and forces quarterbacks into rushed decisions. The Chargers offensive line is decimated by injuries. The protection issues will force Justin Herbert to get the ball out quickly.

The quick-passing game environment favors McConkey and Allen more than Johnston. Shorter routes and rapid releases play to McConkey’s underneath skill set and Allen’s veteran route-running. Johnston thrives on vertical concepts that require time to develop downfield; opportunities that won’t materialize against Houston’s aggressive pass rush.

Los Angeles enters as a 2.5-point favorite with the total sitting at just 39.5 points. The low total reflects expectations for a defensive struggle where neither offense generates significant production. The Chargers may lean heavily on their rushing attack to protect Herbert and avoid exposing their compromised offensive line.

McConkey is probably the best bet out of the three receivers. His role as the primary slot option should provide some target volume even if the passing game struggles overall. However, none of these Chargers wideouts are confident options for fantasy managers navigating championship week. The combination of brutal matchup and offensive line concerns creates an environment where all three should be avoided if better alternatives exist.
