Pittsburgh’s backfield committee continues operating with balanced workload distribution. Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell head into a Monday Night Football matchup with playoff implications. Which Steelers running back warrants fantasy football trust for Week 15?
Jaylen Warren’s Fantasy Outlook
Warren has operated in a 50/50 timeshare for three consecutive weeks. During that stretch, he has relied heavily on touchdown production to salvage fantasy value, finding the end zone once in each of those games. However, the underlying metrics reveal concerning trends about his sustainability as a fantasy asset.
His rushing efficiency has fallen off a cliff. Warren is averaging just 3.2 yards per carry over his last three games, a dramatic decline that makes every rushing attempt feel like a grind. Last week against Baltimore exemplified these struggles, as he managed only 13 yards on eight carries despite Pittsburgh’s offense moving the ball effectively in the 27-22 victory.

The receiving game offers a potential lifeline. Warren caught three passes for 49 yards against the Ravens, providing a respectable supplementary contribution. While he remains a capable pass-catcher, his usage in that area has fallen below his career averages. This reduced involvement in the passing attack lowers his weekly floor considerably, forcing him to depend almost entirely on finding the end zone.
The broader problem extends beyond Warren’s individual performance. Most weeks, the Steelers offense simply isn’t potent enough to sustain the fantasy production of both Warren and Gainwell. With goal-line work now being shared rather than monopolized, Warren’s margin for error has shrunk dramatically.
Kenneth Gainwell’s Fantasy Outlook
Gainwell has worked his way into an even a timeshare, pushing a 50% snap share in most games. The rushing volume has not and will not be there. However, his role as a receiver is a game changer.
Gainwell has seen 24 targets and caught 21 passes over his last four games. He also has three touchdowns over that span, as Warren’s monopoly on goal-line work is gone. Against Baltimore last week, Gainwell rushed four times for 15 yards and a touchdown while adding six receptions on seven targets for 27 yards.

Gainwell has emerged as more than just a valuable handcuff. He is startable in tandem with Warren. His receiving ability provides consistent weekly value in PPR formats even when rushing volume remains limited.
Should You Start Warren or Gainwell This Week?
Once a laughably bad run funnel, the Dolphins have quietly become a respectable opponent defensively. This defense is middle of the pack against both the run and the pass. By no means are they an imposing matchup, but they’re not the pushover they were early in the season.
Last week, the Steelers put up one of their best offensive showings of the season by leaning on the pass. It remains to be seen if they continue with that approach this week. Ironically, that would not be great for the running backs because as beneficial as raw volume is, an extra few rushing yards is not going to move the needle.
Fantasy managers need this offense scoring points so the backs can score touchdowns. This is an important game for both teams, so it will be all hands on deck. Pittsburgh sits at 7-6 while Miami enters at 6-7, with both squads fighting for playoff positioning. The Steelers are 3.5-point favorites at home on Monday night.
Both Warren and Gainwell are viable Flex options. Warren offers goal-line upside despite declining efficiency, while Gainwell provides receiving-game stability in what should be a competitive AFC matchup with playoff stakes.
