The San Francisco 49ers continue to manage a lengthy injury list as they prepare for this weekend’s matchup. Ricky Pearsall is dealing with an injury concern that has sidelined him last week. For fantasy football managers counting on the promising sophomore receiver, what is his current status heading into Week 6?
Ricky Pearsall Injury Update
Pearsall sustained his knee injury during Week 4’s disappointing loss to Jacksonville. The injury occurred when he landed hard on the ground while attempting to make a reception. He initially tried to play through the discomfort but was ultimately unable to continue.
Following further evaluation, team doctors diagnosed Pearsall with a minor PCL sprain. The injury was significant enough to rule him out for Week 5’s Thursday night contest against the Rams, particularly given the shortened preparation time.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated that the team needed to thoroughly evaluate Pearsall’s condition. “Their guess is a minor PCL after he hit his knee hard on the ground,” Shanahan explained to reporters following the initial diagnosis.
Minor PCL injuries typically require two to three weeks of recovery time, which aligns with Pearsall’s current timeline. This Sunday will mark two weeks since the injury occurred, putting him within the expected return window.
However, Pearsall is no lock to play this week despite the encouraging timeline. The 49ers have been cautious with their injured players throughout the season, given the mounting casualties to their offensive personnel.
Wednesday’s practice provides crucial insight into Pearsall’s availability. The team will evaluate his participation level during the afternoon session. A limited practice would represent significant progress and put him on track to potentially play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Unfortunately, Pearsall remained absent from practice, just like he as last year. It’s an inauspicious start and suggests the talented receiver may need another week before he is ready to return.
The timing of his potential return is critical for San Francisco’s depleted receiving corps. With George Kittle still on injured reserve and Jauan Jennings dealing with his own ailments, the team desperately needs healthy pass catchers. However, it seems as if it will not happen this year.
Shanahan said to reporters that the 49ers are “not counting on” Pearsall to play this week. It’s safe to assume he is out.
Pearsall had emerged as the team’s leading receiver before his injury, totaling 20 receptions for 327 yards through the first four games. His 16.4 yards per reception average led all 49ers receivers with significant targets.
Update:Â Unsurprisingly, Pearsall did not practice again on Thursday. It sounds as if his knee is not responding as quickly as the team had hoped. At this point, fantasy managers should not assume he is back in Week 7.
Pearsall Fantasy Outlook
A knee injury resulted in Pearsall missing Thursday night’s game last week, something that wasn’t much of a surprise after he mentioned feeling “instability” coming out of Week 4.
I was never a high-level athlete, but I’ve been covering it for a while, and hearing someone self-describe an injury like that isn’t common.
I’m hopeful that we see Pearsall return this week, but with him being this offense’s primary deep threat (15.9-yard aDOT compared to Jauan Jennings’ 9.8), I’m going to be a week late rather than a week early in inserting him into my lineup.
Those downfield routes require a connection with his quarterback (which requires said QB to be healthy) and the ability to adjust on the fly to track the ball.
Pearsall can access both of those things with time, but I need assurance on the health side for a full week at the minimum before being tempted to roll the dice here.
