The San Francisco 49ers face another injury concern with Ricky Pearsall after the wide receiver was forced to exit Sunday’s loss to Jacksonville. The breakout second-year player has emerged as a key contributor but now raises questions about his availability moving forward. For fantasy football managers counting on his production, what is the latest on his status?
Ricky Pearsall Injury Update
Pearsall entered last week’s game against Jacksonville already dealing with knee soreness after being limited at practice throughout the week. He carried a questionable designation into Sunday’s contest but gutted through the discomfort to take the field.
Initially, Pearsall played well despite the preexisting knee issue. He managed four receptions for 46 yards before disaster struck in the second half. The second-year receiver aggravated his knee injury on a play where he fell hard trying to keep his feet in bounds along the sideline.
After the play, Pearsall felt what he described as “pain and a little bit of instability” in his knee. He left the game for evaluation and attempted to return after working with trainers on the sideline. However, his comeback lasted just one play before he immediately pulled himself out, recognizing that something wasn’t right.
“I was testing it out,” Pearsall explained postgame. “I fell pretty hard on that one play on the sideline, trying to keep my feet in bounds, and I fell pretty hard on my knee. I was just feeling pain and a little bit of instability, so I wasn’t trying to really mess with it.”
Head coach Kyle Shanahan provided clarity on Monday, revealing that the injury appears to be a minor PCL issue affecting Pearsall’s opposite knee from the one that had been bothering him during the week. This means Pearsall is now dealing with problems in both knees.
HC Kyle Shanahan said WR Ricky Pearsall could have a “minor PCL” injury.

The minor PCL designation doesn’t sound long-term in nature, but Pearsall did not practice on Monday as the team continues to evaluate the extent of the damage. Given that San Francisco faces a short week with Thursday Night Football against the Rams, there’s almost no chance Pearsall will be ready to play.
The combination of a preexisting injury, a new one, minimal recovery time, and the need for further evaluation makes his Week 5 availability virtually impossible. Fantasy managers should fully expect to be without Pearsall for Thursday’s divisional showdown.
However, the extended rest period following Thursday’s game, essentially creating a mini-bye week, gives Pearsall a legitimate shot to return in Week 6. Based on the early medical assessment, he should not be out longer than Week 7 at the absolute latest.
Pearsall Fantasy Outlook
Pearsall’s injury comes at the worst possible time for his fantasy value. The second-year receiver had been in the midst of a genuine breakout campaign, recording two 100-yard games already this season and establishing himself as San Francisco’s most reliable receiving threat.
Through four games, Pearsall had emerged as the 49ers’ leading receiver with 20 catches for 327 yards, averaging an impressive 16.4 yards per reception. His combination of route-running precision and big-play ability had made him a weekly starter in fantasy lineups.
The 49ers’ receiving corps has been absolutely decimated by injuries, making Pearsall’s absence even more problematic. With George Kittle on injured reserve and Brandon Aiyuk on the PUP list, San Francisco was already operating with limited depth at the skill positions.
Jauan Jennings is also banged up, dealing with shoulder, ankle, and now rib injuries that make his availability questionable as well. If both Pearsall and Jennings miss time, the 49ers could be forced to rely heavily on players like Kendrick Bourne, who might be their healthiest wide receiver but isn’t on the fantasy radar.
This injury situation creates a domino effect throughout San Francisco’s offense. Without reliable receiving options, the pressure increases on Christian McCaffrey to carry the offensive load, while quarterback Brock Purdy may struggle to find consistent targets.
For fantasy managers, Pearsall’s injury represents a significant loss of a player who was trending toward weekly WR2 status. His ability to create explosive plays and his growing chemistry with Purdy had made him one of the season’s pleasant surprises.
The silver lining is that Pearsall’s injury doesn’t appear to be season-ending. Fantasy managers with available IR spots should strongly consider stashing him for a potential Week 6 return, as his role in the 49ers offense should remain significant once he’s healthy.
