Los Angeles prepares for their Week 14 Monday Night Football showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles following a home victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Omarion Hampton has been on injured reserve since early October after suffering an ankle injury that has kept him out for eight weeks. Will fantasy football managers finally get their explosive rookie running back on the field this week?
Omarion Hampton Injury Update
Hampton’s ankle problem occurred during the fourth quarter of the Chargers’ Week 5 loss to Washington after a defender came down on the back of his foot during a fourth-and-two attempt, forcing him to leave the contest in a walking boot. Los Angeles placed him on injured reserve the following Wednesday, which meant he would miss a minimum of four games.
The Chargers officially designated Hampton to return from injured reserve in Week 13, opening his 21-day practice window. Hampton got in three limited practices last week, his first official practice participation since suffering the injury in early October.
Ian Rapoport revealed that Hampton’s injury was not actually a high ankle sprain, but instead involved a fracture. This explains why he was sidelined for so long, far exceeding the initial four-game minimum timeframe.
Hampton himself confirmed that he has been dealing with a left ankle fracture, clarifying the extended recovery timeline that raised concerns among fans and fantasy managers.
“Omarion Hampton said he’s been dealing with a left ankle fracture. Said he wants to play Sunday but leaving it up to the doctors to clear him,” reported Kris Rhim. The fracture diagnosis makes Hampton’s lengthy stint on injured reserve make considerably more sense given the typical recovery timeline for such injuries.
Hampton was never expected to play in his first week back. The Chargers have been cautious throughout his recovery, prioritizing long-term health over rushing him onto the field prematurely.
According to Daniel Popper, “Jim Harbaugh said Hampton looked ‘good’ this week and is ramping up. ‘Everything is on track.'” The head coach’s comments suggest Hampton’s progression has met the team’s expectations and there have been no setbacks during his return to practice.
The Chargers clearly have a plan for Hampton and we have no indications anything has gone awry. The organization has handled his recovery methodically, allowing him to build up his conditioning and prove the ankle can handle the rigors of practice before clearing him for games.
On Monday, Harbaugh said, “We opened his window, and we certainly wouldn’t have done that 21-day window if he wasn’t close. I feel like he’s been on track, and we’ll let the week play out again.”
We likely need to see Hampton get in a full practice before playing, but that could happen as soon as this week. If Hampton can upgrade to full practice sessions, his chances of suiting up Monday night against Philadelphia increase substantially.
The Chargers have until late December to activate Hampton or he will revert to season-ending injured reserve. Given the positive reports from last week and Harbaugh’s optimistic assessment, all signs point toward Hampton being activated within the next week or two.
On Tuesday, Matt Zenitz reported that Hampton is expected to make his return on Monday night.
Hampton Fantasy Outlook
Hampton’s expected comeback faces one challenge that wasn’t present when he first went down. Kimani Vidal has looked pretty good while handling Hampton’s responsibilities during the extended absence, especially in recent weeks against top-tier defenses.
Vidal has been productive for Los Angeles, providing steady production in both the rushing and receiving game. His performance has been good enough to earn him a continued role even after Hampton returns to action.

The assumption should be that Vidal retains significant touches until Hampton gets full medical clearance and demonstrates he’s ready for a full workload. Even after Hampton returns, Vidal has clearly done enough to secure the RB2 role and change-of-pace work in the rotation.
This creates a potentially tricky fantasy situation for Hampton managers. While he was the presumed starter before getting hurt, Vidal’s strong showing means Hampton might not instantly reclaim a bellcow workload when he’s activated.
Before getting injured, Hampton had accumulated 314 yards and two touchdowns on 66 carries through five games. He also added 20 receptions for 136 yards, demonstrating dual-threat capability that makes him valuable in PPR formats.
Hampton will still be worth putting in lineups once he is back. If you’ve stashed him this long, now isn’t the time to bail. However, expect his initial role to be somewhat reduced as the coaching staff brings him along gradually while acknowledging Vidal’s quality production.
The matchup against Philadelphia on Monday Night Football presents a challenging environment for Hampton if he does make his debut. The Eagles have been solid defensively this season, though their run defense has shown some vulnerabilities. They just allowed both Chicago Bears backs to rush for over 100 yards on Black Friday.
Once Hampton is active for Los Angeles, he can immediately slot into fantasy lineups as an RB2 or flex option with upside. His dual-threat ability and big-play potential make him valuable despite the likelihood of splitting work with Vidal initially.
