The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continue navigating life without their star receiver as they remain firmly in the playoff picture. Mike Evans has been on injured reserve since Week 7 with a broken collarbone. Will fantasy football managers see their top wideout return for the fantasy playoffs?
Mike Evans Injury Update
A hamstring issue during Week 3 forced Evans to miss three consecutive games before he attempted a comeback. His return came during the team’s Week 7 Monday night showdown with Detroit at Ford Field.
The comeback lasted less than a half as tragedy struck in the second quarter. A collision with Lions cornerback Rock Ya-Sin on a deep ball from Baker Mayfield resulted in a fractured collarbone for the six-time Pro Bowler. Evans landed shoulder-first before his head hit the turf, suffering the devastating injury.
Prior to exiting, Evans had drawn four targets from Mayfield without hauling in any passes in his first game action since the hamstring setback. He underwent surgery to repair the fractured collarbone, with doctors projecting a 6-8 week recovery window.
The Buccaneers opened Evans’ 21-day practice window on Wednesday ahead of Week 14. This represents a quicker than expected return from the broken clavicle, as Evans has been medically cleared. Evans being ahead of schedule in his recovery is nothing new, as he has always been a quick healer throughout his career.
Evans got in three limited practices during Week 14. Nevertheless, head coach Todd Bowles ruled Evans out on Friday for Sunday’s game against New Orleans. Bowles stated that Evans is making progress but is not quite there yet.
The earliest realistic return date for Evans was always Week 14. Given that the Bucs have a quick turnaround with a Thursday game in Week 15, it never made sense for Evans to return from a lengthy absence just to have to play four days later. However, Week 15 against Atlanta now appears to be the most likely scenario for his return.
Evans was listed as limited on Monday’s estimated practice report. Bowles said both he and Jalen McMillan have a chance to play on Thursday.
As long as Evans can get in a full practice by Wednesday, he should be on the field Thursday night. The original 6-8 week timeline aligns with this progress. A Week 15 return would give Evans the full eight weeks of recovery from the surgery.
Evans’ Fantasy Outlook
Tampa Bay is gradually getting healthier at the skill positions. Chris Godwin returned to action in Week 12 after missing significant time with his fibula injury, and his usage continues to grow as he gets healthier. Bucky Irving made his long-awaited return in Week 13 after missing two months with shoulder and foot injuries.
Evans is the last piece of the puzzle for the Buccaneers’ offense. Once he returns, Tampa Bay will have their complete arsenal of weapons available for the playoff push. The Bucs could be operating with a full offense for the first time all season when Evans is activated.

Emeka Egbuka continues drawing Baker Mayfield’s primary focus during Evans’ absence. The rookie has taken over the WR1 duties and absorbed elevated passing game opportunities, though his production has been inconsistent largely due to Mayfield’s recent struggles.
Offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard commented on the likelihood of a limited workload for Evans upon his return. He indicated the Bucs will implement a similar strategy to what they did with Godwin and Irving. The focus will be on easing Evans back in and allowing his playing strength to develop.
Evans has been sidelined since suffering the broken clavicle on October 22. This prolonged absence will bring an end to his impressive streak of 11 consecutive seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards. Through six games before the injury, Evans had recorded 27 catches for 364 yards and six touchdowns.
Fantasy managers who have held Evans through this prolonged absence are finally being rewarded for their patience. A Week 15 activation seems very likely, making Evans a must-hold for anyone competing in the fantasy playoffs.
