Luther Burden III Injury Update
Burden sustained an ankle injury during Sunday’s game against the Browns. The rookie wide receiver left the game in the second half and did not return. Burden suffered the apparent ankle injury late in the third quarter on a screen pass with Chicago holding a 21-3 lead over Cleveland.
There has been a surprising lack of information on the injury after the game. Head coach Ben Johnson did not provide any updates on Burden’s condition during his postgame press conference. The team has remained quiet about the severity of the ankle issue.
Burden appeared to remain on the sidelines for the rest of the game before taking a cart to the locker room. The fact that he was able to stay out there to watch the game is a positive sign. The fact that he took a cart after the game is very concerning.
On Monday, we did get an update from head coach Ben Johnson. He described Burden as “day-to-day.” That’s classic coachspeak for “he might play, he might not.” But it’s better than “week-to-week,” or other phrases that would guarantee Burden doesn’t play on Saturday.
At this point, all fantasy managers can do is wait until an update arrives from the team. The Bears play on Saturday so they will hold their first practice of the week on Tuesday. Burden is almost certainly going to be listed as DNP. If he ends up getting in a limited session, that would be a great sign for his availability.
Burden had six catches on seven targets for 84 yards before exiting in the third quarter. This was Burden’s most complete performance as a professional, showcasing the growing chemistry he has been developing with quarterback Caleb Williams.
Burden’s Fantasy Outlook
This is unfortunate timing as Burden was starting to emerge as the Bears’ No. 1 wide receiver. Rome Odunze aggravated his foot injury in pregame warmups last week and seems likely to miss multiple games. Odunze was ruled out shortly before kickoff after aggravating the stress fracture in his foot during warmups.
Burden will be in a great spot to produce if he can get back on the field. With fellow receiver Odunze sidelined, Burden and the rest of the Bears’ receiving corps experienced a potential uptick in usage, and Burden responded before his injury forced an early exit. His gradual introduction to the lineup seems to have paid off, as Williams consistently sought him out early in the game.
If Burden cannot play, it will be DJ Moore and Olamide Zaccheaus as the top two receivers. Moore, Zaccheaus and Devin Duvernay are the only healthy and available options at the position if Burden sits.
The Bears are likely to run more 12 personnel, which could be a boost for Colston Loveland as well. With limited healthy receivers available, Chicago may lean more heavily on tight end formations to compensate for the depleted receiving corps.
Moore had four catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday’s victory. If both Burden and Odunze miss time, Moore becomes the clear WR1 option in Chicago’s passing attack. Zaccheaus has been relevant before and could surprise in an increased role, but is a very risky option.
Fantasy managers rostering Burden should monitor Tuesday’s practice report closely for any update on his status. The short week leading to Saturday’s game makes his availability questionable even if the ankle injury is relatively minor. Without more information from the team, Burden’s status remains genuinely uncertain for Week 16.
