The Arizona Cardinals are monitoring their quarterback’s health as they prepare for this weekend’s matchup against Indianapolis. Kyler Murray is dealing with an injury concern that emerged during last week’s contest. For fantasy football managers tracking the Cardinals’ offensive capabilities, what is Murray’s current status heading into Week 6?
Kyler Murray Injury Update
Murray sustained his foot injury during the third quarter of Arizona’s 22-21 loss to Tennessee on Sunday. The injury occurred following a botched snap that hit Murray in the facemask, leading to a fumble recovery by the Titans defense.
After the turnover, Murray walked to the locker room under his own power for evaluation. The Cardinals initially listed him as questionable to return due to the foot ailment. However, his absence proved brief, as he missed only two plays before returning to action.
Jacoby Brissett entered the game during Murray’s absence but failed to complete his lone pass attempt. Murray’s quick return suggested the injury wasn’t severely limiting, though head coach Jonathan Gannon acknowledged it affected his quarterback’s performance.
“You could tell. You can ask him, I know he didn’t feel great,” Gannon explained after the game. “We talked about that on sideline when he came into the game, a couple things that we had to stay out of. But I thought he functioned after he came in.”
Murray remained noncommittal when discussing his condition postgame. “We have to see,” he told reporters when asked about his foot injury status moving forward.
The situation took a concerning turn on Wednesday when Murray did not participate in practice. While this could represent the team exercising caution, it marks an inauspicious start to the week for Arizona’s starting quarterback.
Wednesday practices have become largely meaningless at this point in the season, with teams frequently resting or limiting players who are even slightly banged up. However, any missed practice time raises questions about a player’s availability, particularly when dealing with a lower-body injury that affects mobility.
Thursday’s practice session will provide crucial insight into Murray’s status. His participation level will indicate whether the foot injury requires additional recovery time or if Wednesday’s absence was purely precautionary.
If Murray cannot play on Sunday, Brissett would step in as the starting quarterback. While Brissett brings NFL experience, his style represents a clear downgrade for Arizona’s skill position players, particularly Trey McBride and Marvin Harrison Jr., who benefit from Murray’s mobility and improvisation skills.
The Cardinals cannot afford to lose their starting quarterback for an extended period, especially after suffering three consecutive losses following their 2-0 start to the season.
Update: Murray missed a second consecutive practice on Thursday. Suffice it to say this is not good. At this point, fantasy managers should prepare to be without Murray. Perhaps he can return to practice on Friday and play, but it sounds as if the Cardinals quarterback will miss at least one week.
With the team possessing a Week 8 bye, it’s entirely possible he is held out next week as well, which would afford him three full weeks to get ready for a Week 9 return.
Murray Fantasy Outlook
We are five weeks into this season and I’m not the least bit confident that we know what we are going to get in this spot.
On one hand, the Colts have crippled poor opposing quarterbacks (Tua Tagovailoa, Cam Newton, and Geno Smith are of no real interest to us and they averaged 7.7 fantasy points against Indy), but on the other, we’ve seen Bo Nix (20.2) and Matthew Stafford (27.4) have success.
Which bucket does Murray get placed into?
Your instinct wants to say the latter, and the numbers suggest the latter.
Arizona has already played New Orleans, Carolina, and Tennessee, all of whom figure to be in the mix for the top overall pick this spring.
Murray’s next finish for a week better than QB12 will be his first.
“Outlook not so clear”.
He’s reached 25 rushing yards in every game this season and has a 30+ yard completion in four of five. That potential is something we are aware of and that’s why he’s in the QB1 mix, but I can’t just erase what we’ve seen thus far, and that is why he’s my QB2 in this game and also checks in behind a pocket-locked Matthew Stafford (at BAL).
