Is Kyler Murray Playing Week 7?

Murray sustained his foot injury during the third quarter of Arizona’s 22-21 loss against the Tennessee Titans two weeks ago. The problem occurred after a botched snap struck him in the facemask, resulting in a fumble that the Titans recovered for crucial field position.

Following the turnover, Murray departed for the locker room under his own power for medical evaluation. The Cardinals initially designated him as questionable to return due to the foot concern, though his absence lasted only two plays before he returned to finish the contest.

Murray did not play in Week 6 against Indianapolis, marking his first absence since returning from a torn ACL in 2022. Jacoby Brissett started and played well, almost leading the Cardinals to an upset victory while completing 27 of 44 passes for 320 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

This week brought steady progress as Murray was limited at practice on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, representing consistent participation throughout the entire week. The Cardinals officially listed him as questionable for Sunday’s contest against Green Bay.

This represents significant improvement from last week when Murray only managed to get in a single limited practice on Friday after missing Wednesday and Thursday entirely. The increased practice participation suggests Murray is nearing a return to game action.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon provided cautious optimism regarding Murray’s progress, stating: “Make sure that he’s healthy enough to play, you know, so we’ll progress him along here this week and see where he’s at.” The comment suggests Murray at least has a chance to play against Green Bay.

However, with the Cardinals’ Week 8 bye approaching, it makes too much sense for Murray to sit one more week and return fully healthy in Week 9. The extra rest would guarantee he returns at 100% capacity rather than risking further setbacks by rushing back prematurely.

General manager Monti Ossenfort addressed Murray’s status when asked if the quarterback remains Arizona’s starter. “I know that’s always a hot discussion,” Ossenfort said on AZ Sports. “We’re going to continue to try and get Kyler where he can get back to doing the things he can do on the field. When he’s doing that, he’ll be out there.”

Murray’s Fantasy Football Outlook

Kyler Murray played in every game last season after dealing with the injury bug for the previous two (19 games played and 15 missed), but he sat last week and this foot sprain doesn’t sound like the type of thing that a mobile QB recovers from in a hurry.

With Arizona going on bye next week and an extra day of prep ahead of their Monday night showdown with the Cowboys in Week 9, my reflex is to have your secondary option ready this week and hope for the best as we get into November.

The problem is that “the best” hasn’t been all that good for fantasy managers. Murray’s best weekly finish this season is QB14, and he’s on a career-low pace in terms of yards per completion.

The rushing numbers have been stable (25+ in all five of his starts), but without much passing upside (two multi-TD games with a 220-yard ceiling), he’s little better than replacement level at this point.

The looming matchup with the Cowboys will be interesting if we assume he’s back, but the schedule stiffens after that, making November 4th potentially “sell Kyler Murray day” should he look the part the night prior.
