The Green Bay Packers return home to host the Minnesota Vikings in Week 12 coming off a hard-fought 27-20 road victory over the New York Giants. However, the win came at a cost as starting running back Josh Jacobs left the game with a knee injury and did not return. Will fantasy football managers have one of their most reliable options available this week?
Josh Jacobs Injury Update
Jacobs was ruled out in the first half of Sunday’s game after suffering a left knee injury on the MetLife Stadium turf. He initially went to the sideline and was checked out in the medical tent before briefly returning to action. However, the seventh-year running back was unable to continue and exited for good after jamming his knee into the notorious MetLife playing surface.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Sunday that Jacobs will undergo more tests Monday on his left knee, but the initial belief is he avoided a significant injury. Pelissero added that “Jacobs returned briefly after jamming his knee into the MetLife turf before leaving for good” and noted “there’s optimism he’ll be back soon”. ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Rob Demovsky also reported the injury is not believed to be season-ending.
ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio provided additional encouraging details, noting that all field tests and X-rays showed Jacobs’ knee is generally stable and intact. The tests conducted immediately after the injury revealed no structural damage, which represents positive news given the initial concern when he was unable to return. Further testing scheduled for Monday will provide more clarity on the timeline for his return.
The fact that Jacobs tried to play through the injury is encouraging. Players rarely attempt to return to action with significant knee damage, and his willingness to give it a go suggests the injury may be less severe than initially feared when he was ruled out. It does not sound like a lengthy absence based on the initial reports, but it does sound as if he will miss some time.
Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur declined to provide specifics when asked about Jacobs’ status after the game. LaFleur noted, “I think anytime a player, especially of his magnitude, doesn’t finish a game, you’re always concerned about the welfare of them,” but offered no further details on the severity or expected timeline.
On Monday, Bill Huber reported that Jacobs won’t need surgery and “possibly’ will be out Week 12. The Packers will probably exercise caution, but it sounds as if this will be a short absence for Jacobs. Wednesday’s practice report will provide the first concrete indication of whether Jacobs has a chance to suit up for Week 12.
Jacobs’ Fantasy Outlook
Jacobs had been one of the best picks in fantasy football entering Week 11. The former first-round pick out of Alabama had posted at least 12.4 fantasy points in every game this season before his injury-fueled dud against the Giants. He entered Sunday’s contest having scored 11 rushing touchdowns through nine games, establishing himself as one of the most reliable weekly options at the running back position.
Before leaving with the injury, Jacobs rushed for 40 yards on seven carries. His absence for the remainder of the contest marked the first time all season that fantasy managers saw him fail to reach double-digit fantasy points. That reliability had made him a locked-in RB1 option every single week prior to the injury.

While Jacobs is sidelined, Emanuel Wilson will take over as the lead back for Green Bay. Wilson played 71% of the snaps against the Giants after Jacobs exited, and that includes the portion of the game when Jacobs was still active. His dominant snap share demonstrates the coaching staff’s trust in him as the clear backup.
Third-string running back Chris Brooks played only five offensive snaps despite Jacobs’ absence, recording just one carry for eight yards.
Wilson rushed 13 times for 61 yards and a touchdown against New York, providing fantasy managers a glimpse of his potential as the featured back. He has operated as the Packers’ primary backup all season, though his limited usage behind the workhorse Jacobs has kept him off the fantasy radar. That changes dramatically if Jacobs misses time, as Wilson would see a massive uptick in both touches and snaps.
Wilson is a top waiver wire add this week and will be startable for as long as Jacobs is sidelined. The Packers host Minnesota at noon on Sunday, in a crucial NFC North matchup. Fantasy managers should prioritize Wilson if they need running back help or own Jacobs, as he represents the clear handcuff with standalone value in the Packers’ offense.
