Josh Downs Injury Update: Should Fantasy Managers Expect the Colts WR to Miss Week 7?

Josh Downs is coming off two really solid outings, but now appears to be dealing with an injury. What is the latest on the Colts' WR's status?

The Indianapolis Colts received surprising news during Wednesday’s practice preparations as one of their key offensive weapons appeared on the injury report unexpectedly. Josh Downs has been placed in concussion protocol after sustaining a head injury during last week’s victory over Arizona. With no prior indication of injury concerns, should fantasy football managers prepare for an absence from their emerging slot receiver?

Josh Downs Injury Update

Downs’ concussion came as a complete surprise, as there were no public indications of injury concerns until he failed to participate in Wednesday’s practice. The veteran receiver played all four quarters during Indianapolis’ win over the Cardinals, making his appearance on the injury report unexpected.

While the exact timing of the concussion remains unclear, it likely occurred during the game against Arizona. The injury may have happened when Downs took a hard hit in the end zone on a touchdown reception early in the fourth quarter. The fact that he completed the game suggests the symptoms may have developed afterward.

The Colts officially listed Downs as “did not practice” on Wednesday’s injury report, marking his entry into the NFL’s concussion protocol. This protocol requires players to pass through multiple stages before being cleared for game action, making his Week 7 availability against the Los Angeles Chargers uncertain.

It is rare for players who are concussed to not miss at least one game, with the most common length of absence being exactly one game. Players that do return without missing a game almost always get in a limited practice session on Wednesday, making Downs’ complete absence particularly concerning for his Sunday availability.

If Downs can return to practice on Thursday, that would provide him a chance to progress through the protocol quickly enough to play. However, his Wednesday absence suggests he is not going to play this week, with the most likely outcome being a one-game absence.

Downs Fantasy Outlook

Downs has been building momentum in recent weeks despite still not playing in two-receiver sets. He has posted consecutive games with double-digit fantasy points and has emerged as a reliable target for quarterback Daniel Jones in the slot.

Most significantly, Downs leads the Colts in targets over the past three weeks with 20, one more than each of Michael Pittman Jr. and Tyler Warren. His six catches for 42 yards and one touchdown against Arizona marked his best fantasy performance of the season at 16.2 points in PPR formats.

With Downs almost certainly out for Week 7, there is no clear replacement for his slot role within the Indianapolis offense. Alec Pierce, Ashton Dulin, and Adonai Mitchell all operate mostly on the outside rather than in the slot where Downs has found his niche. Additionally, Dulin is also dealing with a chest injury that kept him out of Wednesday’s practice.

None of the potential replacements are worth starting in fantasy lineups given their limited roles and lack of consistent production. Pierce returned from his own concussion absence last week but managed only two catches for 21 yards on three targets.

Downs’ absence should serve to consolidate targets further between Pittman and Warren, while operating as a slight downgrade for Jones, who has developed good chemistry with the slot receiver. Warren has emerged as Jones’ most trusted target with 29 receptions for 370 yards and two touchdowns through six games.

Fantasy managers should monitor Downs’ practice participation throughout the week, as his progression through the concussion protocol will determine his availability. However, given the typical timeline for concussion recoveries and his Wednesday absence, expecting his return in Week 8 appears more realistic than hoping for a quick turnaround.
