Joe Mixon Injury Update: Should Fantasy Managers Expect the Texans RB To Play This Year?

The outlook on Joe Mixon's status remains grim. Is there any hope fantasy managers see the Texans RB take the field in 2025?

The Houston Texans continue to navigate the season without one of their key offensive weapons. Joe Mixon has been sidelined with an injury that has kept him off the field for the entire season thus far. Will fantasy football managers see their star running back return to action anytime soon?

Joe Mixon Injury Update

The Texans have provided no encouraging updates about Mixon’s recovery timeline over the past several months, maintaining the same vague stance they’ve held since summer. General manager Nick Caserio offered his latest assessment on Tuesday, painting a bleak picture of the situation.

“It’s a very gray situation,” Caserio said. “Joe’s worked at it. There were times where he’s made progress and other times when the progress is kinda stalled. Obviously we’re getting pretty late in the game here, I don’t want to establish any sort of expectations. I don’t think we have anymore clarity at this point”.

Since being added to the reserve/non-football injury list in July, the veteran back has sat out the entire offseason program, every preseason contest, and every regular season weeks to this point. Sources indicate the problem affects his foot and ankle, stemming from private training sessions conducted away from team facilities during the offseason.

When previously asked about the injury, Caserio described it as a “tough, complicated situation” while declining to establish any concrete return date. Following the team’s October bye week, Caserio told reporters the organization wouldn’t impose a strict timeline for Mixon’s rehab, instead preferring to “take it one day at a time.” Despite suggesting “more clarity” could emerge within a month of that statement, no substantive progress reports have surfaced.

Perhaps most troubling is Caserio’s admission that whether Mixon plays at all this year remains “in limbo”. The franchise’s refusal to project even a practice return suggests significant obstacles still stand between the running back and actual game participation.

Multiple reports characterize the injury as particularly intricate, with substantial uncertainty about whether the 29-year-old will take the field before the season concludes. Analysis suggests this represents an aggravation of prior ankle problems rather than a completely separate injury.

Head coach DeMeco Ryans has made statements that appear to reference Mixon in the past tense, telling reporters “We’re rolling with the guys that are here” while discussing what Mixon “brought to the team”. Such language fuels speculation that Houston’s coaching staff has mentally moved forward without expecting his availability this season.

As Week 12 approaches, Mixon’s absence now spans more than two-thirds of the fantasy season. Nothing suggests he’s close to resuming practice activities, let alone appearing in actual games. Industry consensus holds that Mixon will not suit up in 2025.

Mixon Fantasy Outlook

Houston has employed a two-back system featuring Nick Chubb and Woody Marks throughout Mixon’s extended absence. Chubb received the initial opportunity as the primary option, though his results have disappointed.

The former Browns standout sees his production dictate by game flow. Houston wins lead to increased Chubb volume and fantasy scoring chances. Deficits cause Marks to absorb the majority of snaps and carries.

The rookie Marks has flashed potential and offers superior value in PPR scoring thanks to his receiving contributions. His ability to function in both phases gives him an edge over Chubb’s more traditional approach.

Houston’s ground game ranks near the bottom of the league, averaging under 110 rushing yards per contest. The lack of an explosive backfield presence has constrained the offense’s overall effectiveness.

Should Mixon somehow achieve full health, logic dictates he’d resume workhorse responsibilities given the substantial contract extension he signed prior to the season. However, that possibility becomes less plausible with each passing week of silence from the organization.

Fantasy managers who invested any draft capital in Mixon should abandon any hope he contributes in 2025. What began as a temporary setback has morphed into a season-long absence. With meaningful updates non-existent and less than half the schedule remaining, it’s abundantly clear Mixon won’t play this year.
