Joe Burrow Injury Update: Should Fantasy Managers Hold or Drop the Cincinnati Bengals QB?

Joe Burrow faces a lengthy recovery from his toe injury, but is not quite done for the season. Should fantasy managers hold or drop the Bengals QB?

Cincinnati’s championship aspirations came crashing down during a second-quarter play against Jacksonville that changed everything for the Bengals. Joe Burrow sustained what would become a season-altering injury while attempting to escape pressure from Jaguars defenders. For fantasy football managers who invested heavily in the star quarterback, the harsh reality has become clear over the past month.

Joe Burrow Injury Update

Burrow’s injury occurred during the team’s Week 2 victory over Jacksonville when he was tackled awkwardly while trying to avoid a sack. The initial diagnosis revealed a Grade 3 turf toe injury requiring immediate surgical intervention, with medical experts projecting a minimum three-month recovery timeline.

Dr. Norman Waldrop performed Burrow’s surgery at Birmingham’s Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center. Waldrop, who has previously operated on high-profile athletes like Tua Tagovailoa and Derrick Henry, specializes in foot and ankle procedures for professional athletes.

The severity of Burrow’s condition cannot be understated. Grade 3 turf toe involves complete tears of all soft tissues in the big toe, including ligaments and the joint capsule. This represents the most serious classification of the injury, far beyond what the casual name might suggest.

Medical experts have emphasized the complexity of recovery from this type of injury. Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer noted during his “Inside Scoop” segment that turf toe is “one of the hardest, most painful injuries to come back from” in professional football.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, turf toe occurs when the toe hyperextends while planted firmly on the ground. The injury happens more frequently on artificial surfaces, which are less forgiving than natural grass when players’ cleats get caught.

Three months from Burrow’s September surgery would put his earliest possible return in mid-December. However, multiple medical professionals have suggested even that timeline may be optimistic given the nature of his injury and the demands of playing quarterback.

The Bengals have relied on Jake Browning to fill the void left by Burrow’s absence. Browning previously served as Cincinnati’s starter for seven games in 2023 when Burrow suffered a different season-ending injury, leading the team to a 4-3 record during that stretch.

Burrow Fantasy Outlook

The unfortunate truth for fantasy managers is that Burrow’s 2025 season is effectively over. Even in the most optimistic scenario where he returns by Week 16, the circumstances make him an unrealistic fantasy option for championship weeks.

Fantasy managers face the difficult decision of whether to continue holding Burrow on their rosters. While keeping him in an IR slot costs nothing, any roster flexibility lost to maintain hope for his return represents a poor investment of valuable resources.

The mathematical reality shows that even if Burrow somehow returns in December, he would need extensive practice time to regain game readiness after major surgery. Asking him to perform at an elite level immediately upon return during fantasy playoffs represents an unreasonable expectation.

Additionally, Cincinnati’s playoff chances continue to diminish with each passing week under Browning’s leadership. The Bengals would need to remain in meaningful games for Burrow’s return to make sense from a team perspective, which becomes less likely as the season progresses.

Browning has struggled significantly compared to his 2023 performance, throwing five interceptions in limited action this season after managing just seven picks across 243 attempts the previous year. His current interception rate of 8.5 percent ranks worst in the NFL among qualified quarterbacks.

The Bengals have been outscored 14-13 while they were playing offense in Weeks 3 and 4. This team will not remain competitive without Burrow.

The combination of Burrow’s severe injury, extended recovery timeline, and Cincinnati’s declining playoff prospects creates a scenario where patience will likely go unrewarded. Fantasy managers should redirect their attention toward immediately available quarterback options rather than hoping for a miraculous comeback.

Competitive leagues demand roster efficiency, and holding Burrow represents a luxury few fantasy teams can afford. The waiver wire almost certainly offers more reliable weekly streaming options than waiting months for a player who may never see the field again this season.

Fantasy managers should accept the difficult reality and move forward with alternative plans rather than clinging to false hope for Burrow’s return.
