The Minnesota Vikings’ promising young quarterback faces an unexpected setback that could significantly impact fantasy football lineups for the coming weeks. Following a medical evaluation, what initially appeared to be typical growing pains from a second-year player has taken a concerning turn.
Fantasy managers who invested in this rising talent will need to reassess their strategies as the team prepares for a potentially extended period without their planned starter. The timing couldn’t be more challenging, with crucial divisional matchups on the horizon.
J.J. McCarthy Injury Update
McCarthy struggled in his second career game against the Atlanta Falcons, completing just 52.4% of his passes for 158 yards and two interceptions. On Monday, we discovered a high-ankle sprain may have contributed to his subpar play in the second half.

The “rookie” was able to finish the game, but now faces the possibility of being out for two to four weeks while he recovers. The Minnesota Vikings have their bye during Week 6, so they could realistically bench him for three weeks before the bye and bring him back healthy during Week 7.
Carson Wentz is set to start in Week 3 until the second-year signal-caller can return.

McCarthy Fantasy Outlook
A high ankle sprain is expected to cost McCarthy two to four weeks (Week 6 bye) after he got dinged up on Sunday night against the Falcons. I expect the Vikings to take a very cautious approach with a QB they hope to build a long-term winner around.
Not only is he coming off a knee injury that cost him his true rookie season, but the NFC North isn’t exactly up for grabs at the moment — the Packers and Lions both look good through two weeks.
Week 3 Fantasy Football Injury Recap: Players Include Joe Burrow, J.J. McCarthy, Jayden Reed and Others
Dynasty managers need to find a replacement, while redraft managers who stashed McCarthy as an upside backup can feel free to move on. Even if he returns after the bye, the Eagles, Chargers, Lions, and Ravens await Minnesota in Weeks 7-10.
If McCarthy can return and get reps, this season will be viewed as a success. There’s no reason to assume that high-end fantasy production will occur at any point in 2025. In the meantime, though, the Vikings will turn to 32-year-old Carson Wentz to steady the ship, something that fantasy managers are right to be wary of.
