Jayden Reed Injury Update: When Should Fantasy Managers Expect the Packers WR To Return?

Jayden Reed has been on IR since Week 3. Will fantasy managers see the Packers WR return to action soon?

The Green Bay Packers maintain their methodical approach with their injured wide receiver. Jayden Reed remains on injured reserve following surgeries to repair both his collarbone and foot injuries. With Reed now eligible to be activated from injured reserve, should fantasy football managers expect his imminent return to action?

Jayden Reed Injury Update

Reed suffered a broken collarbone during Green Bay’s Week 2 victory over Washington when he came down awkwardly on his shoulder after hauling in a touchdown reception that was ultimately wiped out by a penalty. The problem grew more complex because he was simultaneously dealing with a Jones fracture in his foot sustained during training camp.

The Packers placed Reed on injured reserve before he underwent surgery on September 16 to repair both the collarbone and foot fractures simultaneously. This dual surgeries guaranteed Reed achieves full health upon his eventual return.

Though Reed qualifies for activation from IR at this point, that window still arrives prematurely considering his current stage of healing. Typical collarbone injury recovery spans six to eight weeks, with medical experts anticipating Reed will require closer to eight weeks rather than the optimistic six-week scenario.

Coach Matt LaFleur acknowledged early on that Reed would be sidelined for an extended period while expressing confidence about seeing him back before the season concludes. However, both the team and medical staff have remained quiet about his progress since the surgery, indicating no urgency to expedite his comeback.

Reed did not receive a designation to return from IR ahead of Week 11. However, ESPN’s Rob Demovsky provided an encouraging update on Thursday: “MarShawn Lloyd and Jayden Reed appear to have ramped up their rehab. Both still on IR so no photo or video allowed but they were working up a sweat off to the side”.

This marks the first substantive indication that Reed is making tangible progress in his rehabilitation. Performing side work represents a standard prerequisite before players return to full practice participation. It suggests Reed is drawing closer to a comeback, potentially within the next couple of weeks.

According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Reed’s foot injury has fully healed. The team is now monitoring the collarbone to determine his readiness to resume playing.

Reed should be approaching full recovery. However, a Week 12 appearance does not quite seem in the cards.

Reed’s Fantasy Outlook

When Reed eventually takes the field again, he’ll rejoin a dramatically transformed receiver room that could impact his role within the offense. Christian Watson returned from ACL surgery in Week 8 against Pittsburgh.

Romeo Doubs has emerged as the undisputed top receiver during Reed’s absence, consistently commanding at least 85% of offensive snaps in healthy games. No other Green Bay wideout has reached an 85% snap rate in any single game this year.

Matthew Golden hasn’t progressed quite as the organization anticipated, though he’ll still occupy the field and consume some of Reed’s opportunities. The season-ending knee injury to tight end Tucker Kraft also alters the offensive dynamic. Kraft had functioned as their most productive yards-after-catch weapon before going down.

Green Bay has historically avoided using Reed as an every-down player, which establishes a ceiling on his fantasy value even when completely healthy. His exclusion from three-receiver packages limits both his playing time and target opportunities compared to teammates.

Watson’s return and instant production means the receiving group will be significantly more crowded when Reed gains clearance. The Packers now have established roles designated for Doubs and Watson, with Golden rotating in as well.

Prior to his injury, Reed had tallied three receptions for 45 yards and scored a touchdown across just 23 plays spanning two games. He found the end zone in Week 1 and came inches from another score on the play where he suffered his injury in Week 2.

Reed likely won’t deliver substantial fantasy production even following his activation. He retains boom-or-bust potential, but the deeper depth chart and his limited usage render him too inconsistent for dependable weekly starts. Fantasy managers holding Reed should continue monitoring for any practice window announcement, though a return probably won’t materialize until late November at the earliest.
