Garrett Wilson Injury Update: Will Fantasy Managers Get the Jets WR Back Week 8?

Garrett Wilson missed last week's game with a knee injury. When will the Jets WR return to action? Should fantasy managers expect a prolonged absence?

The New York Jets face continued offensive struggles as they work through the absence of their top receiving threat. Garrett Wilson missed last weeks’ game with a hyperextended knee sustained during the team’s embarrassing London defeat. With the Jets desperately needing offensive production, should fantasy football managers expect their elite receiver back anytime soon?

Garrett Wilson Injury Update

Wilson suffered his knee injury during the second quarter of the Jets’ 13-11 loss to the Denver Broncos at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. The injury initially appeared to be a hip problem based on early assessments, but further evaluation revealed Wilson sustained a hyperextension to his knee during the contest.

Wilson was helped off the field and taken to the locker room for evaluation, but managed to return for a few snaps in the third quarter. Despite his brief return, he was not targeted for the remainder of the game and finished with just two catches for 28 yards. Head coach Aaron Glenn explained after the game that Wilson “tried to be able to give it a go, just didn’t feel good enough”.

NFL Network’s Adam Schefter reported that Wilson’s MRI revealed a hyperextended knee that would sideline him for “a couple of weeks.” The injury avoided any serious structural damage, but the hyperextension requires time to heal properly.

Wilson missed all three practice sessions leading up to Week 7’s contest against Carolina and was ruled inactive for that game, marking the first missed game of his NFL career.

Head coach Aaron Glenn offered no substantive update on Wilson’s status during Monday’s press conference, maintaining the team’s cautious approach to his recovery timeline. The injury is still not considered long-term, but the Jets are clearly prioritizing Wilson’s complete healing over rushing him back prematurely.

With the Jets’ Week 9 bye approaching, the expectation remains that Wilson will target a Week 10 return against Houston. The extended break would provide additional recovery time and allow Wilson to return at full strength rather than risk re-injury by playing through discomfort.

Wilson Fantasy Outlook

Wilson’s extended absence represents a catastrophic blow for fantasy managers, as he was emerging as one of the few reliable options in an otherwise dismal Jets offense. Through six games before his injury, Wilson leads the team with 36 receptions for 395 yards and four touchdowns, putting him on pace for another 1,000-yard season despite the team’s struggles.

The Jets’ passing attack has been historically poor without Wilson available, continuing to rank as the NFL’s worst aerial offense. In the London game where Wilson was injured, New York posted a franchise-low negative-10 net passing yards, highlighting how crucial he is to any offensive success.

Without Wilson, the Jets lack any viable fantasy replacement options. Josh Reynolds represents the next-closest receiver with minimal production, while Allen Lazard and rookie Arian Smith have provided virtually nothing for fantasy purposes.

The team has signed veteran Trenton Irwin to the practice squad as depth, but he offers no immediate fantasy relevance given the Jets’ overall offensive dysfunction. Mason Taylor has seen increased targets as the primary tight end, but his production remains limited in such a struggling system.

Fantasy managers should continue to hold Wilson through the bye week, as his talent and role suggest at least WR2 production upon return. His Week 10 comeback should provide a significant boost just as fantasy leagues enter their crucial stretch run, especially if Tyrod Taylor takes over as the starting quarterback.
