The Tampa Bay Buccaneers face another divisional matchup as they look to maintain their lead in the NFC South standings. Emeka Egbuka has been managing a hamstring injury that has carried over from recent weeks. Will fantasy football managers have their rookie receiver available for Week 8?
Is Emeka Egbuka Playing Week 8?
Thursday update:Â Egbuka returned to a limited practice today. This shows meaningful progress compared to last week when he did not practice until the team’s third session of the week. There’s a decent chance Egbuka avoids a final injury designation entirely. He is very likely to play on Sunday.
Egbuka was expected to miss at least one game with his hamstring strain that he sustained during Tampa Bay’s Week 6 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. The rookie receiver was forced to exit in the second half and was quickly ruled out for the remainder of that contest.
However, Egbuka wound up playing in Week 7’s Monday night game against the Detroit Lions despite the injury concern. The Bucs were clearly planning to use him situationally at less than full strength, but circumstances changed when Mike Evans suffered a broken collarbone during the contest.
After Evans went down with his injury, Tampa Bay had no choice but to put Egbuka on the field more than they initially intended. Fortunately, the rookie seemed to be moving well and made it through the entire game without any noticeable setback to his hamstring.
Egbuka did not practice on Wednesday, though. On the surface, this is obviously less than ideal. However, Egbuka has already followed a practice pattern of DNP-DNP-LP twice this season and played.
The Bucs are known to be a very cautious team when it comes to practice participation for injured players. They consistently opt to give their players time to rest and recover during the week so they can perform when it counts on game day.
Given that Evans is now lost for most of the rest of the season and Chris Godwin has already been ruled out his a fibula injury, the Bucs desperately need Egbuka available. The team will continue to be careful with him at practice, but given that he successfully played last week, it stands to reason he will be fine to play this week as well.
Egbuka Fantasy Football Outlook
Egbuka has become the last man standing in Tampa Bay’s decimated receiver room following the injuries to Evans and the ongoing absence of Godwin. The rookie is already establishing himself as the frontrunner for Offensive Rookie of the Year honors with his exceptional production.
Through seven games, Egbuka has compiled 31 catches for 527 yards and five touchdowns on the season. His 78.2 receiving yards per game ranks among the top receivers in the NFL, demonstrating remarkable consistency for a first-year player. The Ohio State product leads all NFL rookies in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns.

Egbuka was named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Month for September and has continued his outstanding production into October. His ability to perform in clutch situations has been particularly impressive, with multiple game-winning contributions in Tampa Bay’s comeback victories.
As long as Egbuka is healthy enough to play, he belongs in fantasy lineups as a reliable WR2 option with WR1 upside. His target share has increased significantly with Evans and Godwin sidelined, making him Baker Mayfield’s primary receiving threat.
The rookie’s combination of reliable hands, route-running precision, and red zone effectiveness makes him one of the most consistent fantasy options available during a week when many teams are on bye. His proven ability to play through the hamstring discomfort provides additional confidence for fantasy managers.
