The Washington Commanders continue navigating widespread uncertainty across their receiving corps as they prepare for Monday’s crucial matchup with Kansas City. Deebo Samuel Sr. has been dealing with a persistent heel injury that forced him to miss his first game of the season last week. Should fantasy football managers expect their reliable target to return to action?
Deebo Samuel Sr. Injury Update
Samuel has been battling a bruised heel for multiple weeks, creating ongoing availability concerns for Washington’s offense. The injury first emerged ahead of Week 5, when he missed the team’s opening practice sessions before ultimately suiting up and performing well against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Samuel played through the injury for two consecutive weeks despite obvious limitations. He was a true game-time decision against the Chicago Bears after missing multiple practice sessions throughout the week. He ultimately played, but was clearly compromised with just four catches on five targets for 15 yards.
Last week brought a definitive decision when Samuel did not play against the Dallas Cowboys, marking his first missed game of the season. The Commanders ruled him out on Saturday after he was initially listed as questionable following limited Friday practice participation.
The heel bruise has become a matter of pain tolerance rather than structural damage, with the issue requiring complete rest to heal properly. The hope is that one week off will be enough to let the injury heal and for it to not be an issue going forward.
With the Commanders playing on Monday Night Football against Kansas City, their first practice of the week won’t be until Thursday. Samuel’s participation level in that session will go a long way toward determining his availability for the primetime contest.
Head coach Dan Quinn gave a positive update on Monday. Speaking to John Keim, Quinn said Samuel is on track to practice this week.
Samuel Fantasy Outlook
Currently leading the Commanders with 34 receptions for 315 yards and four total touchdowns through six games. Samuel has established himself as quarterback Jayden Daniels’ most reliable target this season.
The prevailing narrative this summer was that the Commanders overspent on a veteran receiver and that while it may help them win games, the fantasy impact would be minimal. That assessment has proven completely wrong.
Washington has been utilizing Samuel in and out of the slot with great success. His target share sits at a strong 27.2%, and while some of that reflects Terry McLaurin’s ongoing health issues, Samuel has looked excellent physically when healthy.
The Commanders offense is in complete shambles heading into Week 8, creating a dire situation regardless of Samuel’s availability. Washington started a wide receiver corps of Chris Moore, Jaylin Lane, and Luke McCaffrey against Dallas last week, highlighting their complete lack of healthy receiving options.
Jayden Daniels also tweaked his hamstring during the Cowboys loss and may not be able to play this week, creating additional uncertainty at the quarterback position. If Daniels cannot go, Marcus Mariota would step in as the starter for Monday’s contest.
McLaurin does not appear to be on the precipice of a return despite the optimism expressed over the past two weeks. The veteran receiver has now missed four consecutive games with his quad injury and has shown minimal progress in practice participation.
The combination of potential quarterback uncertainty and receiver depth issues creates a challenging environment even if Samuel returns to full health. He could be looking at Marcus Mariota throwing to a bunch of backup receivers once again, significantly limiting the upside for all Commanders skill position players.
Samuel’s target share should remain elevated given the lack of alternatives, but the overall offensive effectiveness will be severely compromised without proper quarterback play and complementary receiving threats to take pressure off the coverage.
