David Njoku Injury Update: Is Cleveland Browns TE Harold Fannin Jr. a Priority Waiver Wire Add For Fantasy Managers?

David Njoku left last week's game with an injury, thrusting Harold Fannin Jr. into the TE1 role. What is the latest on the Browns TE situation?

The Cleveland Browns continue dealing with offensive struggles as their season spirals downward. David Njoku sustained a knee injury during Sunday’s loss to Pittsburgh that has his availability for Week 7 in question. With fantasy football managers already frustrated by Cleveland’s anemic offensive production, Njoku’s injury adds another layer of uncertainty to an already challenging situation.

David Njoku Injury Update

Njoku suffered his knee injury late in the fourth quarter of the Browns’ 23-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers when he took a shot to his leg that caused his knee to hyperextend. The veteran tight end initially left the game but was able to return briefly before pulling himself out again, unable to continue playing through the discomfort.

Cleveland initially reported the injury as a thigh issue during the game, but head coach Kevin Stefanski clarified after the contest that Njoku was dealing with a knee problem. The team has provided limited details about the severity of the injury, with Stefanski stating Monday that he did not have an update on Njoku’s condition.

However, encouraging news emerged from CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, who reported that while it remains unclear if Njoku will play this week against the Miami Dolphins, “the belief is that the injury isn’t anything significant” according to his sources. This suggests the Browns may be taking a cautious approach with their veteran tight end rather than dealing with a long-term absence.

The injury occurred during a particularly frustrating performance for Cleveland’s offense, which managed just nine points against Pittsburgh and has yet to score more than 17 points in any game this season. Njoku had caught three passes for 28 yards on six targets before exiting the contest.

Wednesday Update: Njoku did not practice on Wednesday. Head coach Kevin Stefanski described his starting tight end as “truly day-to-day.” What’s the difference between “day-to-day” and “truly day-to-day?” The implication is that “day-to-day” is something coaches say, but don’t actually mean, but in this case, it’s true.

Either way, Njoku is not off to a great start. If he can return to a limited practice on Thursday, that will put him on track to play. Another absence would do the opposite. Given the nature of Njoku’s injury, fantasy managers should expect Njoku not to play this week.

Njoku Fantasy Outlook

While Njoku remains Cleveland’s clear TE1, rookie Harold Fannin Jr. has already established a significant role that was eating into the veteran’s fantasy value even before this injury occurred. Fannin seized the opportunity when Njoku left Sunday’s game, finishing with seven receptions for 81 yards on 10 targets against Pittsburgh.

For the season, Fannin has compiled impressive numbers with 28 catches for 254 yards and one touchdown on 38 targets through six games. The rookie third-round pick has shown particular chemistry with quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who has leaned heavily on his tight ends through his first two NFL starts.

The bulk of Fannin’s production against the Steelers came both in garbage time and after Njoku exited the game, but the performance demonstrated his capability as a featured option. The rookie looks like a legitimate TE1 for fantasy purposes for as long as Njoku remains sidelined, making him a priority waiver wire addition.

Fantasy managers should continue holding Njoku given the expectation that his injury isn’t serious, but adding Fannin provides both immediate value and insurance against further setbacks. Even when Njoku returns to full health, Fannin’s expanded role suggests he’ll continue cutting into the veteran’s target share.

Cleveland’s offensive struggles limit the upside for both tight ends, but Gabriel’s tendency to target the position frequently creates a floor for production. Fannin represents one of the better streaming options available at tight end.

The Browns face the Miami Dolphins in Week 7, and Njoku’s status will likely remain uncertain until closer to game time. Fantasy managers should prepare contingency plans while monitoring practice reports throughout the week for clarity on his availability.
