C.J. Stroud enters his fourth season leading the Houston Texans, but his fantasy football profile is heavily clouded by low volume and a conservative scheme. Despite his real-life competency, we are three years in, and Stroud has yet to hit 25 TD passes. When you combine that capped passing ceiling with his extremely limited rushing upside, you get a quarterback who consistently lacks the high-end weekly output required for starting fantasy rosters.
Should You Draft C.J. Stroud in Fantasy Football?
I think you can draft C.J. Stroud late in 2026 if you’re desperate and like low-volume passers. That’s not really my cup of tea. He had the great rookie season. He hasn’t been doing it since.
We know Nico Collins is there, and I’m higher on him than anybody. I guess in theory, if you think Collins is that good, there are going to be weeks where he could elevate Stroud beyond what he would normally offer.
But look at what this team’s doing. They’re building around the defense. They drafted a running back last season in Woody Marks. They bring in a running back in David Montgomery this season. That doesn’t exactly scream a team that wants to feature the passing game and thinks they have a game changer at quarterback that they’re going to lump 30-plus attempts onto on a weekly basis.
All that happens, and then Jayden Higgins looks good in camp. Maybe it’s a breakout. Maybe they’ve got a secondary option. Maybe they’ve got two small forwards on the perimeter for Stroud to explore with, in Collins and Higgins. Then, Higgins tears his ACL. This is where we’re at. They bring in Kayshon Boutte. If he’s going to save your passing game, then your passing game doesn’t deserve to be saved.
We’ve got issues here, and Stroud doesn’t run either. There are a bunch of red flags. Not to mention, I haven’t even addressed the offensive line. We don’t know that he’s going to get to the back of a seven-step drop anytime soon.
Stroud’s going to have his weeks, because Collins is going to do his thing. Dalton Schultz is a nice, reliable target. There are going to be some weeks where he pushes the top 15 at the position, but I don’t think they’re going to happen often enough. This team wants to win games 20-17. You know what doesn’t happen in 20-17 games? Fantasy production from your quarterback.
I’m going to pass. Stroud is not the option for me. I’m not even paying up a lot at the quarterback position, but I’ve sold myself on Aaron Rodgers this offseason, and guys like that down the board a little bit. If you want to go the rushing route, Malik Willis is a better option than Stroud. He’s not a top-20 guy for me. He’s Superflex only. I’m not touching him in standard redraft formats.

C.J. Stroud’s Week 1 Fantasy Outlook
Is there a chance Stroud bounces back and this year more resembles his rookie campaign than anything we’ve seen since?
Of course. He has access to an elite WR1, a running game that figures to improve with veteran leadership, offensive line play that can’t get worse, and pass-catching depth that should level up after taking their lumps in 2025.
But for Week 1? I’m out.
Stroud really doesn’t strike fear into defenses with his legs, and that was the skeleton key to putting up a usable stat line against Buffalo a season ago (3 of the 4 QBs to score 15+ fantasy points against them did so with over 40% of their production coming via the rush).
He’s an underdog to throw for multiple scores this weekend, and it stands to reason that the Texans very much want to control the number of possessions that occur in this one. The more competitive Houston is, the less it is asking from QB1 this week, and that’s not generally how I want a team to act if I’m considering their signal caller in any fantasy format.
