The Green Bay Packers prepare for their critical Week 16 Saturday night road matchup against the Chicago Bears following their disappointing loss to the Denver Broncos. Christian Watson left Sunday’s game with a chest injury and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Will fantasy football managers have the breakout receiver available for the final stretch?
Christian Watson Injury Update
Watson is not doing himself any favors to shed the injury-prone label. The fourth-year receiver landed hard on his shoulder in the third quarter of Sunday’s contest. Watson left the game and did not return.
The injury occurred when Watson attempted to catch a deep pass from quarterback Jordan Love. Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II cut Watson off and made a leaping interception. In the process, Watson fell to the turf and landed heavily on his left shoulder.
Watson remained down on the field, writhing in pain and clutching his left shoulder. The Packers initially ruled him questionable to return with a chest injury, but they downgraded him to out roughly 15 minutes after issuing their first update. The injury was initially described as a chest issue, but it seemed to be more his shoulder. Based on this week’s practice reports, it is, in fact, his chest.
Things grew more concerning when Watson took an ambulance to a local hospital in the postgame for further examination of his injury. The hospital visit was a precautionary measure to perform a CT scan. Watson was cleared to travel home with the team following the examination.
The situation looked bad, but some positive news arrived on Monday. Ian Rapoport reported that Watson did not suffer a major injury. Additional tests did not show anything to Watson’s chest or shoulders that would require an extended absence. While that was good news, it seemed unlikely he would play this week given the severity of the fall and the short turnaround.
However, Watson was able to practice on Wednesday, getting in a limited session. This is very encouraging, especially given how it looked on the field when he went down. The official designation is that it is a chest injury. As a reminder, this is the Packers’ second practice of the week, as they play on Saturday.
The fact that Watson was able to practice is a very good sign for his availability. Head coach Matt LaFleur said the team is not ruling out Watson for Saturday’s game. LaFleur indicated that functionality is a key factor, and Watson must demonstrate that throughout the week. The head coach noted he will give Watson as much time as possible before determining if he can play.

Watson will likely be limited again on Thursday and draw a questionable tag. LaFleur said a decision on Watson’s status could be taken up to game time. The combination of the short week and the severity of the injury initially made his return seem extremely unlikely, but his participation in Wednesday’s practice changes that outlook.
Watson had previously missed the first six games of the season due to recovery from a torn ACL he suffered during the final game of the 2024 season on January 5, 2025. Despite facing numerous injuries throughout his career, the receiver has been showcasing some of his finest performances lately, serving as the team’s primary target. In the previous meeting against Chicago, Watson recorded four receptions for 89 yards and two touchdowns.
Watson’s Fantasy Outlook
The good news is fantasy managers will be able to make a decision on Watson once they find out whether he is playing and have the entire Sunday slate available as alternatives. With a Saturday kickoff, managers will have clarity on Watson’s status before needing to set their Sunday lineups.
If Watson suits up, he profiles as a solid WR2 option against a Bears secondary he torched in Week 14. The Bears will be without cornerback Kyler Gordon, who was placed on injured reserve earlier this week after suffering a groin injury. Chicago’s pass defense remains vulnerable, particularly to explosive receivers like Watson.
if Watson has to miss this game, Romeo Doubs could be back on the menu as a viable WR3/Flex option. Doubs had seen his fantasy value tank with the superior talent Watson overtaking him as the top option in the passing game. Jayden Reed also may see more usage, but his role is largely unaffected by Watson, as he plays exclusively in three-receiver sets.
The reality is the Packers remain a run-heavy offense and will continue to limit passing to only when necessary. Green Bay has leaned heavily on Josh Jacobs and the ground game throughout the season. With Watson’s status uncertain, the team may lean even more heavily on its established rushing attack.
Fantasy managers who have Watson rostered should monitor the injury report closely on Thursday. His practice participation will provide the clearest indication of whether he can suit up Saturday. If Watson is ruled out or looks unlikely to play, managers have the benefit of the Saturday kickoff to pivot to Sunday alternatives without risking a zero in their lineup.
