Christian McCaffrey remains one of the most productive fantasy assets in football whenever he takes the field. The problem is that taking the field has become the entire question with him. He turns 30 this season and has already dealt with a training camp issue. Fantasy managers have to decide whether the ceiling is worth the anxiety in 2026.
Should You Draft Christian McCaffrey in Fantasy Football?
As of early September, McCaffrey has an ADP of 5.4, which puts him at a positional rank of RB3 off that ADP. PFN’s fantasy football analysts, Jason Katz and Kyle Soppe, however, are a little lower on him. They have him as their RB6. On Katz’s board, he’s 8th overall. On Soppe’s board, he’s 10th overall, for an average of 9.
The story on McCaffrey is pretty simple, and it’s why he’s lower on the analyst boards. It’s the uncertainty that comes with the injury risk. When he stays healthy, he is a bona fide league winner almost every time. When he doesn’t, it’s a trap. It’s a roll of the dice, a spin of the wheel. Whatever analogy you want to use, it fits in McCaffrey’s case.
He lays claim to the two best PPR RB fantasy seasons in NFL history, including the 2025 campaign. On top of that, he lays claim to four of the best six seasons all time. That’s an incredible monopolization of the most efficient seasons in RB history that we’ve seen on the fantasy spectrum. He also has three separate seasons that place top 25 all time among RBs in cumulative receiving EPA, including, you guessed it, the 2025 season. McCaffrey is still that dude.
A lot of the circumstances bode well for him this year. He faces little volume competition. He’ll be relied upon once again, and even more so with a thinner receiving corps and Ricky Pearsall out indefinitely. Shanahan’s scheme is still certifiably elite, and the team’s offensive line, which returns four of five starters, finished 6th in PFN’s OL impact scoring last year.
The only question is McCaffrey’s availability. Recently, he sat out with hip tightness the whole week before the 49ers’ Week 2 preseason game and did not play. But no indications of an extended hiatus have been given, and his absence for the most part is likely precautionary.
But there are so few true volume RB opportunities in fantasy football, with the league increasingly dominated by RB committees. Injuries also represent an entropy that no player is safe from. Even though in our perception McCaffrey is more prone to it, injuries can hit anyone at any time. It’s just the way of the game.
I think McCaffrey’s ultimate league-winning upside is absolutely worth the gamble in the 4-to-5 range. His situation is once again primed for production. The 49ers’ uniquely excellent support structures are very much still intact, and McCaffrey himself remains at his peak. If he does get injured, you can at the very least say that you went out swinging.
But I’d argue the greater risk is in passing up McCaffrey, because if you pass him up for someone else and he does stay healthy, then you’ve given up a true league winner. In my opinion, in fantasy football you’ve got to shoot for the stars. When McCaffrey is healthy in this system, we know he is that dude. He is one of the best RBs in the league. In my opinion, that’s very much worth the risk.

Christian McCaffrey’s Week 1 Fantasy Outlook

We’ve seen McCaffrey showcase his elite versatility in his season debuts in consecutive seasons (9 catches on 10 targets last season, 6 on 7 the year prior), and I’d bet very much on him having to do it in three straight if he’s going to return anything close to value this week.
That’s not to say he was a bad first-round selection (I don’t believe that to be true), but for Week 1, I’m not in love with the profile, and it’s a matchup thing.
Against the Rams in 2025, a defense that has less firepower than it does today, CMC turned 34 carries into 87 yards and didn’t have a single rush gain more than 8 yards. Now, he did catch 8 balls in each of those games, and the Niners scored 52 points, so it’s not as if they were locked down, but most weeks come layered with McCaffrey upside in multiple facets, and I just don’t believe that to be true in this spot.
This is going to sound crazy, but could there be some buy-low appeal after this game?
He won’t come cheap, but the Rams are a brutal matchup for any team, never mind a squad they see twice annually. McCaffrey’s rushing efficiency was an issue for all of 2025, and I think it’s at least possible that if he struggles to find lanes and maybe doesn’t score, there could be surface-level panic for the manager watching this game on national TV as a standalone spot.
It’s not that they’ll be looking to deal him, but if you are interested, it’s very possible that his lowest value point comes over the next 7 to 10 days. The Dolphins and Cardinals are on the books for the next two weeks: the explosive games are coming. If you want to get into the CMC business this season and were unable to do so on draft day, there’s a chance that you have a shot at acquiring him for maybe 90 cents on the dollar before Week 2 kicks off, especially if you have a player who overachieves.
