With Jordan Love expected to miss the next 3-6 weeks, how does this impact the fantasy football rankings at the QB position entering Week 2 of NFL action?

Raise your hand if you had Baker Mayfield finishing the season opener as the QB1 overall in fantasy football … well, I was higher than consensus on him, but his performance certainly has him moving up the rankings at the QB position entering Week 2.

Here is a closer look at my fantasy football QB rankings for Week 2 of the 2024 NFL season.

The Top QBs To Start in Week 2

    Jared Goff, QB, Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions found themselves in a bit of a dog fight against the Los Angeles Rams to start the 2024 NFL season but could have easier sledding offensively for their Week 2 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Bucs were absolutely brutalized at the cornerback position in Week 1 with starting cornerback Zyon McCollum (concussion) and Bryce Hall (carted off with an air cast on his leg) both exiting the game against the Washington Commanders early with injuries. Additionally, All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr. suffered a foot/ankle injury late in the fourth quarter and is expected to miss the next 3-4 weeks.

Lastly, impact DT Calijah Kancey missed Week 1 while dealing with a calf injury — which could make this suspect pass-rushing unit even less effective against this great Lions offensive line if he is unable to go this Sunday.

The strength of this Buccaneers defense has traditionally been slowing down opposing rushing attacks, which is why I expect Jared Goff to dissect this banged-up secondary with Amon-Ra St. Brown, Sam LaPorta, Jahmyr Gibbs, and an emerging Jameson Williams at home in a potential shootout at Ford Field in Week 2.

Baker Mayfield, QB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Baker Mayfield’s outstanding Week 1 performance may see him start the season as the QB1 overall entering Week 2 of the 2024 NFL season, but his 289 passing yards and four scores with no turnovers against the Commanders is what should give you reason for optimism entering their Week 2 matchup against the Detroit Lions.

Mayfield’s big day included just six incompletions — one of which even left a little bit of meat on the bone with a mild overthrow to rookie Jalen McMillan early in the first quarter. It’s entirely possible Mayfield could’ve produced an even bigger fantasy day in Week 1 with a few more throws to open receivers.

All minor issues aside, Mayfield continued the hot play we saw from him to finish last year — he was the QB5 overall in fantasy football from Week 8 through the rest of the regular season.

Mayfield is set to enter Ford Field to take on a Lions defense that he lit up to the tune of 349 passing yards and three scores in the Divisional Round of last year’s postseason. Through the first 15 games of the Week 1 slate in 2024, the Lions have given up the second-most passing yards in the league at 304 yards.

If Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and the aforementioned McMillan can build off their great debut against Washington, we could see Mayfield light up the scoreboard again in Week 2 in an attempt to keep pace with the high-powered Lions offense.
