The Philadelphia Eagles thrashed the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl 59 and have the honor of hosting the first game of the 2025 NFL season. As a result, it was recently announced that the Eagles will play the Dallas Cowboys to open the season, and many Philadelphia fans reacted to the news on X.

Eagles To Host Cowboys in Week 1
Since Nick Sirianni was hired as head coach in 2021, the Eagles have been one of the NFL’s best teams. They’ve made the playoffs each of his four seasons and lost to the Chiefs in Super Bowl 57.
That kind of track record will get you a slew of prime-time games, and the Eagles were the host team for the first NFL game in Brazil last season. Philadelphia defeated the Green Bay Packers in the second game of the 2024 season, and will host the Cowboys in 2025’s first.
The Eagles and Cowboys have a storied rivalry that has been going on since Dallas entered the NFL in 1960. Dallas leads the all-time series 74-58 (including playoffs), but Philadelphia convincingly swept the season series last year.
Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending hamstring injury in Week 9, right before the Eagles came to town. Philadelphia throttled Dallas 34-6 to secure its first win at the Cowboys since 2017.
Cooper Rush had taken over for Prescott, and the Cowboys’ offense was a shell of itself the rest of the season. The teams linked up again in Week 17, with the Eagles demolishing the Cowboys 41-7. Philadelphia had already locked up the NFC East, but the win secured its first season sweep of Dallas since 2011.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news about the season opener in a recent tweet.

The news brought on reactions from both Eagles and Cowboys fans alike. Let’s look at some of the best.
Most Eagles fans are excited for the chance to stick it to Jerry Jones by raising the Super Bowl 59 banner in front of the Cowboys. One fan got the ball rolling with a simple message, tweeting, “The Super Bowl banner raised in front of Jerry jones.”

Another fam responded similarly, “There are other matchups with more storyline but it’s always going to be a good time rubbing that fresh banner and ring in the face of Cowboys fans! #FlyEaglesFly”
One Philly fan confidently replied, “Always nice to start the season on a win.”
Most Eagles fans had similar reactions, but a small group wasn’t happy that Dallas would begin the season in prime time.
Great, another season of the Cowboys in primetime being shoved down our throats.

Another group of fans wanted the Eagles to open the season against the Washington Commanders. This after Philadelphia defeated Washington 55-23 in the NFC Championship Game, and a Week 1 rematch would have been fun to see.
should’ve been the commanders

The Eagles are primed for another deep playoff run after looking unstoppable in the 2024 postseason. That team will be honored one last time with the banner raising on opening night, but Philadelphia will have already turned its attention to repeating in 2025 by that point.
