Long-time Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams has called it a career after eight seasons. While he was a dominant force when healthy, injuries derailed multiple seasons and led to Williams landing on the physically unable to perform list at the outset of training camp.
He recently decided to hang up his cleats, and NFL fans reacted on social media.
How Did Fans React to Mike Williams Retiring?
Williams was the Chargers’ first pick after relocating to Los Angeles. The team took him with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, and he spent his first seven seasons in Los Angeles. His statistics were never all that impressive, but, at 6’4″, 220 pounds, he had a presence that defenses had to respect.
Williams tore his ACL in Week 3 of the 2023 season, and the Chargers released him afterwards. He signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets last offseason and was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers after nine games.
He returned to Los Angeles on a one-year contract this offseason, but opted to retire before getting too deep into training camp. Fans then reacted on X after hearing the news.
Many noted his complicated injury history, and what could have been had Williams stayed healthy. One fan posted, “Wow such a good player destroyed by injuries.”

Williams missed six games in his rookie season with a back injury. He then suffered a transverse process fracture in his back late in the 2022 season and the ACL tear in 2023.
Another fan noted, “Damn injuries killed his career i feel for him genuinely.” Yet another fan wrote, “I don’t think we all realize just how dominant Mike Williams could’ve been if it wasn’t for injuries. Dude had it all.”
Some fan reactions focused on other areas. One posted, “All that cap space and we spent in on a guy who got blown up by a firework and a guy who retired on the 1st day of training camp.”
Recently signed running back Najee Harris suffered an eye injury celebrating July 4 with fireworks.
Another wrote, “Gonna miss big mike but damn who is Herbert throwing to this year?? Might as well have me run a couple go routes and see what happens.”
However, one of the prevailing themes was that Chargers fans see Williams’ retirement as an opportunity for the team to re-sign Keenan Allen. One fan posted, “Chargers chose Williams over Allen just for Williams to retire before training camp.”

Another simply said, “Time to bring in Keenan Allen @chargers.” Another fan wrote, “Now Keenan Allen back to the Chargers, please.”
Allen was a third-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft by the then-San Diego Chargers and spent his first 11 seasons with the team. Williams and Allen created a formidable duo, though Allen also has a lengthy injury history.
The six-time Pro Bowler was traded to the Chicago Bears last offseason for a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He totaled 70 catches, 744 yards, and seven touchdowns in his lone season with the team.
Allen is still on the free agent market and would probably benefit from a shortened training camp at this stage of his career. Chargers fans want him back, but will the team listen?
