Michael Penix Jr. found himself in the middle of a fight on Wednesday, and it started with a deep shot that had everyone talking. The Atlanta Falcons quarterback hit Ray-Ray McCloud downfield during a joint practice with the Tennessee Titans, and what followed turned a routine rep into a full-on scuffle.
What Sparked Michael Penix Jr.’s Clash With the Tennessee Titans?
Penix completed a long pass to wide receiver McCloud, then emotions spiked as Penix and several Titans defenders traded words before things boiled over into a physical confrontation. This situation escalated quickly after the play and drew players from both sides into the mix.
In the play in question, McCloud beat his defender, made a clean catch, and spun away from multiple Titans before celebrating, which appeared to trigger the scrum.

Penix rushed down the field, got in the middle of it, and was seemingly thrown to the ground. He later addressed the moment and how it unfolded.
“Competitors for a deep pass, they had a lot of words for our practice,” Penix said. “So, I gave my worries and just went a little bit too far.

“Yeah, threw the deep ball, um, and man celebrating. Celebrating somebody ain’t liked (it). Then it just went on from there. I really don’t remember too much after that, to be honest.”
What Else Happened During the Joint Practice?
While Penix was involved, several of his teammates jumped in. Additionally, McCloud and other players were part of the scrum. The session was the second joint practice between the Falcons and Titans in Flowery Branch, Georgia, at Atlanta’s training facility, and tensions often rise as these practices wear on.
The Penix and McCloud dust-up was one of several early incidents. During team drills with both sides’ No. 1 defenses, Titans defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons and defensive back Julius Woods had their helmets ripped off, and Falcons receiver Drake London also had his helmet removed while jawing with Titans defenders.
Multiple altercations continued through the morning, including one between Titans rookie EDGE Femi Oladejo and Falcons offensive lineman Kaleb McGary.
Additionally, the Titans didn’t have the best practice on Tuesday against Atlanta, which may have contributed to the chippy tone as frustrations carried over into the next day. Wednesday’s practice is the final joint workout before the August 15 preseason game between the Titans and Falcons in Atlanta.
