Sky F1’s Natalie Pinkham Shares Painful Recovery Update After Being Forced Out of Brazil GP

Sky F1’s Natalie Pinkham shares an emotional recovery update after major surgery forces her to skip the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend. Read here.

It’s been a rough few months for Sky Sports F1’s Natalie Pinkham, who’s had to take an unexpected step back from the Formula 1 world she’s been part of for more than a decade, and just when fans were looking forward to seeing her back on screen for the Brazilian Grand Prix, she shared a heartfelt update explaining why she won’t be making the trip to São Paulo this weekend.

A Difficult Setback for Natalie Pinkham

Pinkham is one of the most familiar and friendly faces on Sky Sports’ coverage of F1, as she’s been with the network since 2012 and has covered everything from race weekends to special features that bring fans closer to the action, and her energy has made her a favorite among viewers and drivers alike.

However, Pinkham has been facing a very different kind of challenge lately, as in September, shortly after the Italian Grand Prix, she revealed that she had undergone neck surgery and would be “out of action for a bit,” and while she hoped to recover quickly enough to return in time for the Brazilian round, things haven’t gone entirely to plan.

In a post on Instagram, she wrote, “Hello friends… I had hoped to be on a flight to Brazil yesterday, but the last couple of months have been trickier than I expected following neck surgery; and I am not there just yet…. Now the hard work really starts…let’s do this! (Sorry if you don’t like scars).”

She went on to thank her Sky F1 colleagues, her doctors, and her loved ones for helping her through this tough recovery phase, and the post also included a short video showing her progress and her positive spirit despite the visible scars. Fans immediately flooded the comments section with messages of support, which included some big F1 personalities.

Behind the Scenes of Pinkham’s Recovery

Pinkham has been refreshingly open about what she’s been through; speaking on the ‘Mid Point’ podcast with Gabby Logan last month, she shared that the surgery came with some serious risks, including potentially losing her voice. “They have to actually take your voice box out, which is a bit gross,” she explained. “You have to sign something to say you might lose your voice.”

The procedure involved removing a damaged disc and fusing her neck using a small support cage. Since then, Pinkham has been easing her way back to normal life, saying she’s had to change how she eats and speaks because of the scar tissue, “It feels like you eat or drink something and it just stops there, you have to wait a while. So, little snacks throughout the day as opposed to big meals.”

However, Pinkham’s trademark optimism has not dimmed, and she admitted that taking time off after 20 years of nonstop work has made her reflect, “I’ve never really had (a break) in the last 20-odd years and it’s interesting because when you stop physically, that’s often when you stir up the mental noise. It’s been a real period of reflection, the last six weeks, which has had its pros and cons.”

While Pinkham continues her recovery, Sky Sports’ F1 coverage of the Brazilian Grand Prix goes on without one of its key on-screen personalities, and the São Paulo race is shaping up to be another crucial weekend in the world championship fight between Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, and Max Verstappen.
