Former F1 Racer Logan Sargeant Taps Ford WEC Seat for 2027 in Major Career Move After Williams Run

Logan Sargeant lands a Ford WEC seat for 2027 as the ex-F1 Williams driver joins the hypercar project targeting Le Mans glory in the WEC debut.

Logan Sargeant is not done with racing yet, and after a tough and unforgiving spell in F1, the former Williams driver has landed a high-profile new role that could reshape the rest of his career. Ford has confirmed Sargeant as one of its drivers for its 2027 World Endurance Championship hypercar program, marking a major step for both the American manufacturer and the young Florida native.

Ford’s return to top-level endurance racing is starting to take shape, and Sargeant is right in the mix, too.

A Fresh Start for Logan Sargeant After a Tough F1 Chapter

Sargeant joined Williams in 2023 with plenty of hype and support, but life at the back of the grid is rarely fun, as the learning curve was steep, the car was difficult to drive, and points were hard to come by.

His best F1 result was a 10th-place finish, and while he showed flashes of speed, it was just not there. By 2024, pressure had mounted, and Williams eventually replaced him with Franco Colapinto for the final part of the season. It was a tough way to step away from the grid, especially for a driver who had worked his whole life to reach F1.

Since then, Sargeant has been busy rebuilding and has raced LMP2 machinery in endurance events and stayed close to the sport while waiting for the right door to open, but that door has now swung open with Ford.

The 25-year-old appeared at Ford’s season launch in Detroit yesterday and did not hide his excitement: “It’s a privilege to be here and be welcomed into the Ford family. I’m super excited for this programme and super excited to help spearhead the development of the hypercar. I’m excited for the season ahead and getting ready for the following year.”

Ford Racing Hypercar Programme Manager Dan Sayers was full of praise for Sargean: “Logan brings a level of technical sophistication and high-downforce experience that is vital for a programme of this scale. Having an American back in a Ford at Le Mans feels right. It’s a nod to giants like Dan Gurney and AJ Foyt, who showed the world in 1967 what happens when American grit meets global ambition.”

Inside Ford’s Bold Hypercar Plan

Ford’s 2027 Le Mans Hypercar project is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about programs in endurance racing, and the company has already confirmed a chassis partnership with Oreca and will run a two-car factory team under WEC rules. The car will use an LMDh platform and is expected to share its tub with brands like Audi, Alpine, and Genesis.

The biggest talking point so far is the engine, as Ford is bringing a 5.4-liter V-8 powertrain based on its Coyote family, the same bloodline used in the Mustang GT3 program. This hypercar version will be naturally aspirated, putting Ford alongside American rival Cadillac in terms of running cars without turbochargers in the LMDh field.

Sayers has described it as a more thoroughbred race engine, even if it shares a block with the GT3 unit. Sargeant will not be alone and will be joined by experienced Ford factory drivers Mike Rockenfeller and Sebastien Priaulx, who have strong endurance and GT backgrounds.

The team is still keeping many details under wraps, as the name and final look of the car have not been revealed, and plenty of development work still remains. The program is expected to debut at the start of the 2027 WEC season, with the opening round likely in Qatar at the end of March.

Fans were quick to react once the news dropped on social media, with one saying, “Watch Logan Sargeant win Le Mans.” Another wrote, “Its gonna be fun. Rooting for you logan.”

Another wrote, “Is that my american goat LOGAN SARGEANT?!”

For Sargeant, it is a chance to fight for overall wins at races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which was never realistic during his time at the back of the F1 grid, and also gives him a chance to grow without the weekly spotlight and pressure that comes with F1.

This move does not erase the difficulties of his Williams years, but it does show that his talent is still valued. Ford is betting on him to help lead a brand-new project, while Sargeant is betting on Ford to give him the platform he needs to win.
